Willie Davis [2022] - I Learned My Lesson / Why Did You Leave Me [Numero Group #NUM5731]

Another new digital reissue from Numero Group today from Chicago blues guitarist Willie Davis. He only appears to have released this one single with both sides being released on two labels, Cher Kee and Daran but with the side switched for each. Neither is dated, but going by other releases looks like it's a late 70s/80s recording but sounds much earlier. 

One source lists it as 1974? He has a cassette single listed for 1993 which does seem to place this release as late 80s, others surrounding it on label discographies are listed as 1987. Also, he was a member of a group called The West Side All Stars who were active in 1987. An odd releases for those times but perhaps it had been in the can for a while?

The A side is a real 'wrist slashing', bluesy deep soul song "I Learned My Lesson" which was sampled by Elijah Blake in 2017 for "Hanging Tree". The flip "Why Did You Leave Me" is a 'jump joint' style blues song.

Sugaray Rayford [2022] - No Limit to My Love [Forty Below Records] (Full EP)

Sugaray Rayford (Caron Nimroy Rayford) is a multi-award winning blues artist who has released six albums to date since his first in 2010, one self-titled and self-released from 2017 which doesn't seem to appear to be listed on DSP's.

He released a six track EP "No Limit to My Love" on 18 Feb 2022 which would appear to possibly be a pre-release of five tracks which will feature on his new album "In Too Deep" due on 4 Mar 2022.

La Arménica Feat Chucky De Ipola [2021] - It's Bad You Know [Self Released]

A real 'left-fielder' (i.e. marmite tune) that has been burning up Northern Soul dancefloors in the last decade is a predominantly blues track by R.L. Burnside from a 1998 album "Come On In" called "It's Bad You Know" (it's played speeded up around +4). It was played on the first series of The Sopranos in 1999 and features on the soundtrack.

It was an album only track first played around 2009/10 until legally pressed on a Pyramid 7" (approx. 2010/11) by Eddy Edmundson to raise funds for Cancer Research UK. Only 100 were produced and the last two copies to sell on Discogs have sold for £200! 

Whether that has influenced this strange cover version (which has elements of jazz-hop and is predominantly instrumental with chants in Spanish) or not I don't know, but I somehow doubt it as, from what I can ascertain,  La Arménica hail from Argentina.  Formed by vocalist, harmonica player Ruben Vaneske (Vaneskeheian) in 2016 who was previously with La Mississippi (aka Mississippi Blues Band) also from Argentina.

It will be interesting to see if this gets any traction on the scene, I somehow doubt it, but posted out of interest and intrigue! 

For some odd reason The Old Grey Whistle Test theme sprung to mind listening to this! i.e. "Stone Fox Chase" by Area Code 615, but probably only because of the harmonica similarities!

From the Apple TV+ Original Series 'Servant' Season 2 is a single by Saleka released 19 Mar 2021.  It's a timeless bluesy/jazzy number.

Saleka appears to a new artist who has emerged in the last year.

Robert Finley [2021] - Souled Out On You [Easy Eye Sound]

Deep Soul from Louisiana by Robert Finley from a forthcoming album 'Sharecropper's Son' due on 21 May 2021. Not for the faint-hearted as this is the real deal raw, bluesy southern soul.

He was semi-professional for many years and then left music but made a comeback in 2016. This will be his third album. 

He appeared in season 11 of America's Got Talent in 2019 and was a semi-finalist.

This is his initial audition singing an original song 'Get It While you Can'.

Billie Holiday [1941] - God Bless The Child [Okeh #6270]

If you're wondering what's going on today, I am celebrating International Women's Day by featuring some legendary female artists of black music from the last century.  

This time it's the turn of Lady Day, Billie Holiday (born Eleanora Fagan) with probably her best known song, originally recorded on the OKeh label in 1941 and another from 1946, both featured in the 1973 movie 'The Lady Sings The Blues' starring Diana Ross as Holiday.

Andra Day has just won a Golden Globe for Best Actress for her portrayal of Billie Holiday in the movie recently aired 'The United States vs. Billie Holiday'.
