Dharmasoul [2024] - Space Ghost [Clover Music Group]

Princeton, NJ, duo Jonah Tolchin (guitar) and Kevin Clifford drums) are known as Dharmasoul. They've been recording since 2018 when then released their first, and only, album "Lightening Kid".

Despite their name, they play a broad range of styles from blues, rock hop-hop and gospel to funk, soul and jazz. Their latest single "Space Ghost" is squarely in the latter category, a soulful jazz instrumental.

The song was written by Tolchin and Clifford with their keysman Brendan Moore, the trumpeter is uncredited.

Soulpersona & Carl Hudson [2024] - Moonraker [Sunset City Records]

A new single from Soulpersona (Morgan Howell) & Carl Hudson, a jazz/funk instrumental called "Moonraker" was released on  Bandcamp last Friday (2 Feb). It is now available on Spotify and other digital platforms today (although we can't find it as yet on Amazon but is available via iTunes).

It's from an a forthcoming album which has been in progress since lockdown and features musicians including Terry Lewis (Guitars) Andy Tolman (Bass) Gabriel Nuzzoli (Percussion) Bryan Corbett (Trumpet, Flugel & Trombone) and Richard Beesley (Saxophones).

Carl Hudson is originally from Boston, Lincs., and has been playing keyboards for Culture Club since 2015. He's also played for artists such as Leroy Hutson, Leon Ware, Omar, STR4TA, Emilie Sande. Jones Girls and Jean Carn amongst others.

Harvey Scales & The 7 Sounds [2024] - Don't You Ever Let It End / The Sound Of Soul [Numero Group #NUM4419]

Numero Group reissue another single from Harvey Scales & The 7 Sounds (last May they reissued "Welcome Home" / "Trackdown"). Both singles were originally released in 1969 on Milwaukee based Magic Touch label owned by Lennie LaCour.

The group was from Milwaukee founded in 1961. The reissue is of the superb deep soul cut "Don't You Ever Let It End" written by Scales and LaCour flipped with a Northern Soul style instrumental "The Sound Of Soul" penned by Scales and band co-founder Albert Vance.

Groovesville Players / Al Kent Orchestra [2023] - Don't Hurt Me / The Way You've Been Acting Lately [Hayley #HR033]

The second delayed release from Hayley Records are both unreleased instrumentals of Northern Soul classics. 

The A side leads with the backing track of J.J. Barnes' "Sweet Sherry" (also used for an unreleased Edwin Starr recording, "Has It Happened To You Yet", which surfaced on Goldmine Soul Supply on 7" in 1997) credited to Groovesville Players under it's original title "Don't Hurt Me". Note that a song with the title "Has It Happened To You Yet" was recorded by The Falcons on Lu Pine in 1964 which is a different song.

The flip is the instrumental backing track for Al Kent's "The Way You've Been Acting Lately" which was originally on the flip side of the vocal but this is an unreleased version with a false start and no backing singers. 

There is a female version floating around YouTube which shows a photo of The Supremes but it was a Neil Ruston release on his Inferno Soul Club label from 1983 by Tina Lewis which has a cover version of Edwin Starr's "Back Street" as the A side.

Menagerie [2023] - The Shores Of Infinity [Freestyle Records] (Full Album)

At the end of July Melbourne-based Jazz ensemble Menagerie, led by Lance Ferguson, released the first track ("Kingdom") from their upcoming fourth album, "The Shores Of Infinity", which they are labelling as 'spiritual jazz'. The second single, "Danieda’s Dance (Radio Edit)", dropped on 18 Aug. 

The full album which consists of only six tracks, although the album has a running time of just over 43 minutes, is released today.

We questioned why Danieda's Dance was labelled radio edit at just over six minutes, but the full album version is just short of none minutes! It's by no means the shortest track either as "Arrival" (our pick of the new material) is 8:47.

To date, Menagerie has released three albums and around six singles. Their debut album "They Shall Inherit" was released in 2012 by Tru Thoughts, their next two "The Arrow Of Time" (2018) and "Many Worlds" (2021), and their forthcoming album, via Freestyle Records.

Luke Smith [2023] - Lockdown 2.0 [Self Released]

Luke Smith is a keyboardist from Manchester who has worked with renowned artists including Chaka Khan, Whitney Houston, Roy Ayers, Frank McComb, B. B. King, Rosie Gaines, BeBe & CeCe Winans, Andrae Crouch as well as pop/rock artists George Michael, Amy Winehouse, Eric Clapton, Phil Collins and Lulu. 

He spent two years with Hot Chocolate as their main keyboard player on their European tour in 1992. He later formed his own jazz band supporting Roy Ayres, Hugh Masekela and Earl Klugh among others.

In 1995 he moved to London as Music Director of the West End musical show 'Mama, I Want to Sing!'.

He began working with George Michael in 2003 on his "Patience" album and performed with him at the inaugural concert of the new Wembley Stadium in 2007.

Having been hospitalised with Covid-19 and in intensive care, Luke decided that if he survived that it was time to release solo material, as he didn't want his legacy  to be that he died with some great music on his hard drive! His debut single "Travellin'" was released in May 2020.

His latest single "Lockdown 2.0", is a jazz-funk instrumental which, not surprisingly, was written during Covid lockdown.

Luke featured here in  Nov '21 with a Linslee Remix of his third single "It's Time" which featured Roy Ayers and Em-Cee.
