IZIPHO SOUL Records to sponsor Gary Van Den Bussche's Starpoint Radio shows

Commencing on 7th March 2023,  IZIPHO SOUL Records has begun sponsoring Gary Van Den Bussche's weekday lunchtime shows on Starpoint Radio. We thought it would be timely to introduce you to the label if you are not already familiar with it.

Since its inception in 2016, the aim of Surrey (UK) based vinyl label IZIPHO SOUL is to release the finest soul music by independent artists ranging from the unreleased, rare reissues, new music, first time on a 7" vinyl, gospel and few self indulgent 'left field' releases that keep the label's musical palette varied.

The label is 100% independent and owned by Patrick 'The Ear' Biggerstaff. The first two releases were under the name ZIP Promotions (Bryan Austin "What Would Marvin Say?" / "Sunday" and Gregg Jackson "One For The Road" / "Your Love") which is the name of his company, named with the initials of his three sons. By the third release (Melvin Brown "Love Stormy Weather") the name changed to IZIPHO SOUL, which still includes ZIP, but is also inspired by his love for jazz and Pharaoh Sanders in particular and his 1973 album "Izipho Zam". The word Izipho translates in Zulu to 'Gifts' so it seemed appropriate to name the label Izipho Soul as that is the label's gift to the soul world.

The label is artist focussed and rewards them financially. Rather than a standard label design, each artist has their own label artwork, some having unique picture sleeve designs to appeal to collectors. The 86th single has just been released (with #87 and #88 still to be revealed) the label will surpass 100 single releases in 2023. In addition, three CD albums (two from Cornell C.C. Carter and one from Kim Tibbs) and four vinyl LPs (Cornell C.C. Carter, Orpheus (aka Jarrod Lawson), Down To Earth and Kim Tibbs) have been released by the label.

Meaning no disrespect to the many of the other UK based boutique vinyl labels, who also do a fine job in releasing previously unreleased or very hard to find works, IZIPHO SOUL must be regarded as one of the front runners with its range and quality of releases.

Patrick's first exposure to Black Music was as a 13 year old schoolboy in the late 70s/early 80s when the Two Tone movement emerged in the UK (for those not familiar with that scene, it was based on ska and reggae). Gripped by that sound, Patrick explored the Jamaican origins of Ska and then Reggae via David Rodigan's Capital Radio show (London). It wasn't long before he was twiddling the dial on his radio set and finding soul shows by Greg Edwards (Soul Spectrum) and Robbie Vincent on Radio London and he was hooked and his vinyl addiction was born.
The easy part in deciding what to release next is identifying something that passes the personal quality test. Then the long process of tracking down the artist / copyright owner and getting a response and building trust, as let's not forget many of these artists have had bad experiences with unscrupulous label owners in the past and not received a red cent for their work so they are understandably wary. Then the negotiation on licensing begins. Each release is tailored to the artist, whether that be a straight licensing fee or a share in the sales proceeds, but Patrick ensures that the artist is rewarded for their work.

One of the label's three most recent releases is the second single on the label from Australian soul/funk collective The Regime and it was their first single "Never Gonna Stop" in 2021 that, to date, has been one of the most successful releases by the label in terms of sales. I would hazard a guess that they may now have been surpassed by the Kim Tibbs LP and CD "The Science Of Completion" released last year? However, quite rightly, Patrick regards each release as a success as the process of identifying what to release and bringing it to fruition is no mean feat in itself as I am sure that there are many that are pursued that don't end up with a release.

Even though IZIPHO SOUL is seen as just Patrick Biggerstaff, there are many people behind the scenes who's valuable input would not make any of this possible. Mark Allbones at Grand Vinyl Ltd deals with all of the manufacturing logistics and designs the labels along with Roger Williams. Philip Ward masters all tracks and anytime an edit has appeared on vinyl, this is Phil's work, he's the genius of seamless restructuring of tracks, a few fine examples being June Evans' "Sunshine Mix" of "If You Want My Lovin". The extended version of Steve 'Doc' Willoughby's "All My Life" and Jesse Graham's edit of "Love Talk".

Gary Van den Bussche's superb promotional work on selected releases always makes an impact across the radio world and adds a valuable addition to the artist's profile. Mick O'Donnell of Soul Discovery has been a huge influence on shaping Patrick's musical tastes and his contacts across the pond are second to none. Mark Merry and his ground breaking Soul Sermon Starpoint Radio show has supported the label from release number one as has DJ Kool Keith, plus Steve Ripley, Andy Tee and Pete Ratcliffe also provide valuable support, and there are many more including SoulStrutter and SoulAndJazzAndFunk who help promote all releases as they emerge!

The Starpoint Radio sponsorship of Gary Van den Bussche's weekday shows is a very exciting move. Starpoint is Patrick's most listened to station and he feels that as this is a big year for releases it's the ideal vehicle to help spread the word!

IZIPHO SOUL like to keep their release announcements usually until two weeks before they hit the market, the reason for this is to not distract from the current releases wanting to give each record as much time as possible to shine. Although sometimes this doesn't go to plan as they get too excited and reveal something in advance, Carmichael Musiclover's "Bring It Home" as an example.

All label releases (that have not already sold out) can be purchased from the website IZIPHOSOUL.com or from top vinyl dealers such as Simply Soul, Juno and Crazy Beat.

The Regime [2023] - Be A Lover / Keep On Lovin' [Izipho Soul #ZP82]

The third new vinyl release from Izipho Soul is the second offering on the label by The Regime. As with the other two posted (i.e. Norman Hutchins and Ronfo/Lee MDonald) is available to pre-order from Izipho Soul for release on 1 Mar '23

It is now, unbelievably, already three years since their wonderful "Never Gonna Stop" was released (included below to remind you just how good it was/is).

The new 7" pairing is "Be A Lover" (released digitally on Tuesday (14 Feb '23)) along with "Keep On Lovin'" for which at present only a short clip is available.

The Regime are a 20+ strong soul/funk collective based in Sydney who debuted with a six track EP "If it is, it is! Isn’t it?" in Aug 2019, which is well worth checking out if you haven't already.

Ronfo & Kindred Spirits Orchestra Feat. Sandi Everett / Lee McDonald [2023] - Don't Let Him Get The Best Of You / Let's Play Luck [Izipho Soul #ZP-86]

The second Izipho Soul 7" vinyl release scheduled for 1 Mar 2023 (along with Norman Hutchins) consists of two sides, written, arranged and produced by Ron Foster.  A third will be announced shortly.

The top side is a new and extended version of Whirlwind's 1975 single "Don't Let Him Get The Best Of Youwhich was a meagre 2:42 when initially released on 7" in 1975 (flipped with "Something, I Can Feel Something") It was released again as the flip to "Full Time Thing (Between Dusk And Dawn)" but unfortunately wasn't released on the 12" version of it as it was the A side that saw most of the action back in the day.  These were the only two releases from the group.

Izipho released an instrumental version (from 1985 I believe) in 2019 which is a completely different arrangement and interpretation using a 21 Piece orchestra. The new version presented here has a new vocal by Sandi Everett who was an original Whirlwind with her brothers Charles and Edward (Eddie) Ancrum ... who went on to become Charles & Eddie ... only joking!

On the flip is a new extended version of "Let's Play Luck", a track from Lee McDonald's "Sweet Magic" album from 1981 on Debbie .

McDonald was also known as Cleveland Parker and was a member of The Village Soul Choir. In 2019 Izipho Soul released a single by Parker, "How Long", which was a gospel interpretation of "Sweet Magic" the title track of his 1981 album recorded in 1989 which took the song to another level.

The label also released a double-sider of killer cuts from The Village Soul choir's catalogue in Oct 2021. The album only "All Purpose Love" (from "Street Opera With A Blues Waltz") and the 12" version of "Sweet Hot Lips" (1976).

The single is available to pre-order now from Izipho Soul for release on 1 Mar 2023.

NOTE, original shorter versions of both songs also included below for comparison.

Norman Hutchins [2023] - I Really Love You / God's Got A Blessing [Izipho Soul #ZP083]

Izipho Soul has two new vinyl single releases available to pre-order which will be released on 1 Mar '23. The first is a pair of tracks by Bishop Norman Hutchins taken from two albums.

The A side is an extended mix of  "I Really Love You" from "Where I Long To Be" (JDI Records 2006) paired with "God's Got A Blessing" from "Nobody But You" (JDI 2002) (which is incorrectly titled "Norman Hutchins" on Discogs)

Norman Earl Hutchins was born in Delaware in 1962 and started his solo music career in 1992 with the release of an eponymous album. He proceeded to release at least another eleven albums over his career with his last album released in 2013.

He started preaching at the age of 8 becoming ordained at 12 and later, aged only 19, the preacher of Hope Church of God in Christ in Delaware. When he relocated to L.A. he became music minister for COGIC before returning to Delaware to start Frontline Ministries.

His first two albums ("Norman Hutchins" (1992) and "Don't Stop Prayin'" (1993) failed to chart. After six years his next album "Nobody But You" appeared on L.A. based JDI where he would release five albums, the first three charted ("Nobody But You" and "Battlefield" in 1999 and "Emmanuel" in 2001) but the last "Battlefield: The Sermon" (2002) and "Where I Long To Be" (2006) didn't.

In 2008 he signed with IR Records for the releases of "Spontaneous Praise, Vol. 1" (2008), "God Is Faithful" (2009), "If You Didn't Know...Now You Know" (2011) and his last album "Hosanna" (2013). All charted on the Gospel Albums chart.

Hutchins has received eight Dove Award nominations and eight Stellar Award nominations, along with Grammy Awards nominations.

Julian Jonah [2022] - Now’s The Time For Us / Comin’ Back For Your Lovin’ [Izipho Soul #ZP85]

Julian Jonah is a musician from London whose career dates back to the late 80s when he produced a series of titles that left a lasting impression on the early House and Acid Jazz scenes. He was part of a movement of UK producers, along with A Guy Called Gerald and Baby Ford, who created the soundtrack to the foundation of the first underground house clubs and warehouse parties in East London and Manchester.

He's possibly best remembered for "Jealousy & Lies" (1988) (which he reissued in 2020) and "Hot To Touch" (1986), from 'back in the day' as both hit the lower reaches of the official UK pop chart. In addition the Watergates project "The Scandal" he did in 1991 was popular in soul circles.

In recent times he's released several singles, most of them posted here such as "I'm Steppin' Out" (feat. Candace Woodson) "Comin' Back For Your Lovin'" (feat. Ada Dyer aka Miss Adaritha who featured on Norman Connors "Take It To The Limit" album in 1980) , "A Little Lovin'" (feat. Lucita Jules), "Just Like A Dream" (feat. Kathy Brown) and his latest single from Jun '22 "Now's The Time For Us" featuring US session singer Tamika Tyan.

Patrick 'The Ears' Biggerstaff has licensed two singles "Now's The Time For Us" and "Comin' Back For Your Lovin'released this year to release on 7" vinyl on Izipho Soul which is set for release on 18 Nov 2022.

You can meet both Julian and Patrick at Love Vinyl in London on 26 Nov where Julian will also be doing a PA of the tracks.

Kim Tibbs [2022] - THE SCiENCE OF COMPLETiON VOLUME 1 [Izipho Soul]

The long awaited, highly anticipated and much lauded new album from Kim Tibbs "THE SCiENCE OF COMPLETiON VOLUME 1" is finally available digitally, on vinyl and CD from this Friday (16 Sep 2022).

The vinyl is available in limited edition red (200) or black double vinyl. I understand that the CD and Vinyl versions are the full length, unedited, versions. The digital version is also being released on Friday but will be the radio edits. Therefore if you want the full, unexpurgated, versions then CD or vinyl is the way to go.

The album is being released in association with Black Orchid Records, Soulfood Music, DSG Radio Promotions, Izipho Soul Records and AWAL/Sony. It was recorded at the legendary Royal Studios in Memphis, TN, and co-produced by Lawrence Boo Mitchell, son of the late great Willie Mitchell.

The project involved twenty five musicians all playing their part to create the most authentic 70s soul you will ever hear in 21st century music. The attention to detail went as far as retrieving Al Green’s microphone from the original Hi sessions to enhance that vintage sound!

Kim has written all eleven songs and are a soundtrack to her life covering a range of themes such as love, hope and faith. It is recommended that you listen to the album from start to finish to fully appreciate each song’s depth, power and beauty.

The album opens with the the lead 7” single "WHERE WOULD I BE WITHOUT YOU?" released in the Spring of 2022 which sold out on pre-order and created a buzz of what is to follow. It peaked at #3 on UK Soul Chart spending 13 weeks on the chart.

Another two tracks were released on 20th Aug as album teasers/tasters billed as "THE VOLUME BEGiNS" which consisted of  "WALK TO THE LIGHT!" and "SUMMERTIME" and topped the UK Soul Chart last week (5 Sep).

The album is being hailed as an 'all killer no filler affair', and that can't be argued with. From this listener's perspective, putting aside the three tracks already released as singles, the highlights are "LOVING YOU MAKES LIFE SO EASY!" (a classic in the making?), "YOUR LOVE" and "I'M HOLDING ON…!" harking back to those 70s female southern soul ballads coming out of Memphis' studios along with "STARGAZING". Oh go on then, I'll also throw "MIRACLES" in the mix.

The album is available to pre-order now from Izipho Soul and most of the respected vinyl dealers.
