Mariah Carey Feat. Brandy [2022] - The Roof (When I Feel the Need) [Columbia Records] VIDEO

A 25th anniversary edition of Mariah Carey's sixth album "Butterfly" was released on 16 Sep 2022.  One track stood out that was released as a single (outside US) in 1997/98 is "The Roof (When I Feel the Need)" (posted on 16 Sep). It has been revamped and instead of Kelly Price who featured on the original, Brandy has been drafted in and a new video for it was released last night.

It wasn't released as a single stateside and didn't fare particularly well elsewhere only registering at #87 in UK and #63 in The Netherlands.

I suspect that the track may have an underground following as a set of nine mixes by Mobb Deep, Full Crew and David Morales exist released in 2020 to celebrate her 30th anniversary as an artist.

It has previously been posted on a feature "Rare Carey" posted in Feb 2021.

Mariah Carey Feat. Brandy [2022] - The Roof (When I Feel the Need) [Columbia Records]

A 25th anniversary edition of Mariah Carey's sixth album "Butterfly" is released today.  One track stood out that was released as a single (outside US) in 1997/98 is "The Roof (When I Feel the Need)" featuring Brandy

It wasn't released as a single stateside and didn't fare particularly well elsewhere only registering at #87 in UK and #63 in The Netherlands.

I'm not sure if this is an alternate version as the original album version credits Kelly Price on backing vocals not Brandy?

I suspect that the track may have an underground following as a set of nine mixes by Mobb Deep, Full Crew and David Morales exist released in 2020 to celebrate her 30th anniversary as an artist.

It has previously been posted on a feature "Rare Carey" posted in Feb 2021.

Mariah Carey [2005] - Fly Like A Bird [Island / Def Jam #B0005784-02]

In case you haven't yet listened to this weeks SoulAndJazzFlavas show from Steve Aggasild (who played this as one of his three slow jam selections) then you are in for a treat. I know there will be those who will see the artist name and simply skip on, but they will have missed out on this, perhaps, little known gem.

The song, "Fly Like A Bird", was released on Mariah Carey's 2005 album "The Emancipation of Mimi" and wasn't released as a single (except for some promo CDS' after the album was released in early 2006) and hence it didn't fare too well on the charts, making this probably not very well know except to die hard Mariah fans who probably wouldn't have appreciated this particular gospel flavoured song by her.

The song was written by Sounds Of Blackness member James 'Big Jim' Wright who was also a member of Jimmy Jam Harris and Terry Lewis' Flyte Time Productions.

Now get yourself over to Steve's latest SoulAndJazzFlavas podcast to see what else you are missing out on!

Rare Carey - Mariah Carey (90s unissued, B sides & chart failures)

Here's some  'off -the-wall' tunes for you. I never thought I'd be posting material by Mariah Carey, but as I've stated before, if it's good enough it doesn't matter who it's by. Forget who it is and listen to the groove.

Mariah Carey [1998] - The Roof (Back In Time) (Full Crew Radio Edit / No Rap) [Columbia #665521 6]

A good 90s stepper. Failed to make any impact on the charts, peaking at #87 in UK and wasn't released as a single in US.

Watch out for other version as most have Mobb Deep rapping in the middle.

Mariah Carey [1995] - Underneath The Stars [Columbia #CAS 8945]

Non- charting single (anywhere) from 'Daydream'.

Mariah Carey [2020] - The Rarities [Columbia #19439814021]

On 11 Dec 2020 a 4 LP set (also released on CD/Digital on 2 Oct 2020) was released containing 15 previously unissued tracks, demos and B sides and 17 tracks recorded live on 7 Mar 1996 at the Tokyo Dome. It was released to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the release of her eponymous debut album in 1990.

The vinyl release was limited edition which sold out very quickly and are now selling on Discogs for silly money, averaging £150 - there is one seller demanding £400 for it!

Here's a few decent tracks from the album.

All I Live For

This is a 90s swing/stepper which was a 'reject' from the Music Box album.

Slipping Away

Released as B side to 'Always Be My Baby', and another swing style stepper.

Mesmerized

A track that was intended to appear in the 2012 crime movie 'The Paperboy', but didn't make the cut. A decent neo/modern soul dancer.
