A new album, "New Era", which appears to be a debut from an artist named Key who we can find no information about. From song writing credits, which attributes each song to the same writer, we would assume that Kiara Lee is her real name.

The song that perked our ears up is the reggae infused "Love", the remainder is predominantly hip-hop/r&b.

KOTO? & Soft Eyez feat. insyt. [2023] - StrongBlackHair [4DATRIBE]

We can't find much information on KOTO? but from our investigations believe that he is Malachi Osuji Robinson from London, Ontario. He's assisted on his seventh single to date, "StrongBlackHair", by beat makers Soft Eyez (William Reich) and insyt. (Isaac Maap) also from Ontario.

This is one of those neo soul / hip-hop tunes that borrows heavily from the past, no doubt sampling beats from a rare sweet soul song.

Vel Nine & NugLife [2023] - PHASES [Have a Field Day Inc. / High Def Ent.]

An 'interesting' release, "PHASES" starts off with a nice groove, which draws you in, and then goes into hip-hop territory and then, around 2:15, converts into a sweet soul lowrider.

Vel Nine (aka Vel The Wonder) is Alyssa Romo from San Gabriel Valley and NugsLife is producer Steven Solis from Korea-town, L.A.

DJ Green Lantern [2033] - Jazz Dream [Gang Green Presents]

Following yesterday's post of "The Chase" by Michael Leonhart & Jswiss feat. Keyon Harrold & DJ Logic, here's some more jazz influenced hip-hop from DJ Green Lantern,  on his latest album "Jazz Dream". Don't panic as it's predominantly jazzy hip-hop beats rather than rap.

Many of the tracks feature well known songs for example Blondie's "Rapture" on "Step Into A World Pt. 1 & Pt.2" (which features Moonchild's Amber Navran) and "Let It Get Into You" uses Marvin's "I Want You" and Tom Browne's "Funkin' for Jamaica".

DJ Green Lantern (aka Evil Genius) is DJ/producer James D'Agostino from Rochester, NY, who rose to prominence when signed to Eminen's Shady Records around 2002 and became his official DJ. He'd released dozens on mixtape/albums since 1998.

Michael Leonhart & Jswiss feat. Keyon Harrold & DJ Logic [2023] - The Chase (Strings Attached) [Self Released]

As in the words of Monty Python ... 'and now for something completely different'. Hip-Hop Jazz with a hint of classical anyone? 

"The Chase (Strings Attached)" featuring Keyon Harrold & DJ Logic is a new reworking from the collaborative minds of accomplished MC JSWISS and Grammy Award-winning producer and trumpeter Michael Leonhart.

They originally released the song as a single in Sep '21 and it featured on their debut album together, "Bona Fide" in Nov '22.

The song has been reimagined with the assistance of an all-star Brooklyn-based string quartet (Mazz Swift, Dana Lyn, Jessica Troy, Marika Hughes) and is anchored by Leonhart's piano-driven dynamic production and JSWISS's wordplay and vocal flow, with heavy beats combining old school boom bap with modern hip hop production. Keyon Harold provides seductive horn lines and DJ Logic adds more complexities to the production.

Having sparked creative chemistry during a monthly residency at NYC venue Jazz Standard,  JSWISS and Michael Leonhart released a string of singles together and their first full project as a duo, "The Alchemy EP", in Jan '21.

Trumpeter, composer, producer, arranger, multi-instrumentalist and songwriter Leonhart is no stranger to crossing genre lines, having played on the Mark Ronson and Bruno Mars Grammy award winning hit "Uptown Funk and collaborations with diverse artists ranging from Meryl Streep through Steely Dan (who he's played with since 1996), David Byrne (Talking Heads), Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings to Questlove, Wu-Tang Clan and Q-Tip to name just a small sample (check out his website bio for more). He is the youngest ever recipient of a Grammy award in 1992 aged just 17.

JSWISS operates seamlessly at the intersection between hip hop and jazz.

SANITY feat. Blue Lab Beats & MELONYX [2023] - Late Night [Self Released]

The MC/rap of Birmingham's SANITY is sweetened by the harmonies of Nottingham duo Melonyx on her latest single "Late Night" which is produced by Blue Lab Beats who appear courtesy of Blue Note Records.

SANITY is Sherelle Robbins formerly known as Lady Sanity. Apparently, she took her name  from a Dizzee Rascal lyric. She performed her song/rap "Go the Distance" at the closing ceremony of the Commonwealth Games in Australia in 2018 when the games were handed over to Birmingham.
