FF Edits [2023] - Ready To Get Down [Discoholics Anonymous Recordings]

Hamburg DJ/Producer FF Edits (Frank Cornelsen) follows up "Sho Nuff"  which sampled Barry White's "Sho You Right" with a 1979 Norman Whitfield composition "Show Time" by Undisputed Truth which he has titled "Ready To Get Down".

He certainly 'adds value' to this one with a much heavier bassline and ups the beat from 94 to 110 to give it a new lease of life.

We thought we'd posted "Sho Nuff" in Feb but it appears not so it's also included below.

Jay Jay [2022] - The Battle Of Crab Vs Foo [Jay Jay Larkins] (Full Album)

Jay Jay is ten-piece funk band from Baltimore, MD. I think they go back a ways as there is a live video of them performing in 1999 on YouTube.

The band members are Marc Rey, John Aversa, Keever Frye, Julie Mays, Dan Cryer, Mike Anderson, Brian Pirrone, Dan Blankinship, Mr. Saw, Joe Taylor.

It's difficult trying to ascertain their back catalogue as they seem to get bundled with other artists with the same name on most platforms, but I think "The Battle Of Crab Vs Fool" is only their second album. The first was released in 2002 titled "Four Years After", which may be a reference to when they were formed i.e 1998?

The tracks that appeal to me most are the two where Julie Mays takes lead on "All On You", which is a bit of a funky stepper, and "No One Else" which has a bit of jazz opening with a muted horn.

Mack Moses [2022] - Coloured Floors [Neonami] (Full Album)

Melbourne's Mack Moses releases his sophomore album "Coloured Floors" today (24 Jun 2022) which follows his debut album "Cassandra" from 2019. In conjunction, the new single from it is "Cool" for which a video premiered earlier today.

The first two tracks "Jump The Broom" (Apr) and "Back Home" (Feb) have already been released as singles and both are throwback boogie funk tracks with "Jump the Broom" a bit reminiscent of Bruno Mars "Uptown Funk", to my ears at least!

In other parts of the album he sounds like Jamiroquai, on "Into The Night" in particular.

It's more of a dance/funk album than soul but, on a day when good quality releases are not particularly easy to come by, I thought it worth posting.

Gillespie & Co. Feat. Coko Buttafli [2022] - What You Gonna Do / Hit The Dance Floor [Funk Night]

A forthcoming limited (500) vinyl release on Detroit's Funk Night label is the sixth release by Gillespie & Co (formally The Aries Vibration/La Glosta Nostra).

Both sides, "What You Gonna Do" / "Hit The Dance Floor", were written by Gloucester (UK) based producer Andrew Gillespie who also plays flute/percussion on the tracks which feature the vocals of  Coko Buttafli from Pontiac, IL. It's a retro sister funk tune.

Funk Night is a label born out of  one of Detroit City's longest running DJ nights and is run by Detroit heavyweight funkster DJ/promoter/producer Frank Raines.

No details available as yet how or when to order but presumably will be available via the vinyl retailers.

Dames Brown Feat. Andrés & Amp Fiddler [2022] - What Would I Do? (Louie Vega & Josh Milan Mixes) [Defected]

If you cast your mind back to last November, you may recall a funky little number from Dames Brown "What Would I Do?" which is another I thought would/should have been received better than it was. On Friday (13 May 2022) a set of four new mixes (vocal and dub long and short versions so only two really!) by Louie Vega and Josh Milan were unleashed.

To be brutally honest I don't feel they retain the raw essence of the original as they seem to have taken away the funky edge and it sounds like it's also been sped up a notch or two (6 BPMs to be exact) and smoothed it into more of a disco tune (which I guess was the purpose) but you can listen and make up your own mind.

Dames Brown Feat. Andrés & Amp Fiddler [2021] - What Would You Do? [Defected Records]

This one escaped on Friday (12 Nov 2021) and just try putting it back in the box.  It's a JAM, try keeping still to this! My immediate thought is that it harps back to James Brown and Marv Whitney style tunes.

Dames Brown are Athena Johnson (who replaced Jael Coston), LaRae Starr (aka Lisa Cunningham) and Teresa Marbury from Detroit who have been laying it down since their debut "Soul Fly" in 2013 written and produced by Joseph 'Amp' Fiddler. They are assisted on their latest release "What Would You Do?" by fellow Detroiter Amp Fiddler and Andrés.

I've included an interview with some video clips of them performing by Timmy Tim WDET 109.9 FM

I've been thinking about what this tune reminded me of and I think it's "You Got To Have A Job" from Marva Whitney & James Brown (1969), or perhaps Marva Whitney "What Do I Have To Do To Prove My Love To You" (1968).
