The Soul Emperor's Soulful Slow Jams show broadcast on L.A. station Soul Radio Coast 2 Coast Mon/Tue (22/23 Aug 2022).
A couple of sounds to pick up on. The opening track is Harry Hay's 1985 version of a Martha & The Vandellas 1966 #3 R&B hit. The song was written by Ivy Jo Hunter, William 'Mickey' Stevenson and Sylvia Moy and has been recorded by several others including Patti & The Lovelites (also posted last week in The Lovelites - A Profile). Detroit guitarist David T. Walker did the first cover in 1969 with an instrumental version, Jean Carn in 1982 and good old Barry Manilow has even covered it in 1974. A previously unreleased version by Ronnie McNeir & Teena Marie was released in 2011 on a compilation "First Class Love: Rare Tee".
A track I thought I'd previously posted which has been a long time favourite is The Soul Children's "Midnight Sunshine" which has been a staple at Soul Essence weekenders for decades. It came out as the flip to "Finders Keepers" in 1976 and is cheap and easy to find for no more than a fiver and a better fiver you are unlikely to spend on a single.
