Alton McClain Scarborough from
Alton McClain & Destiny, who released three album between 1978-81 and are probably best
remembered for their only Hot 100 hit "It Must Be Love" (#32 Hot 100 / #10 R&B) in 1979 (video below), has released a new
single which is a cover of the Maze classic "While I'm Alone". It was Maze's very first hit song in 1977 (#21 R&B / #89 Hot 100). Needless to say it did nothing in the UK until years later, probably first unearthed by the rare groove scene.
She released a handful of singles both prior to and after Alton McClain & Destiny. The group was formed when Alton met Frank
Wilson who introduced her to D'Marie Warren and Robyrda Stiger. The group split up after their third
album. The other two members joined Krystol who released four albums between
1984-89.
Alton McClain later married songwriter/producer
Skip Scarborough who produced the group's third album. She continued to record as a
gospel artist and released a couple of gospel albums, "God's Woman" in 1995 and "Renaissance" in 2005.
This, as far as I can ascertain, is her only single since then and is a bit of a
surprise until you realise that she is appearing in the UK in Jan 2023 at
The Luxury Soul Weekender (see banner at top of page) and of course the Maze
song is a UK soul weekender anthem.
What the heck, we may as well throw Maze version into the mix!
