VA [2023] - Lenis Guess Presents Unbroken Melodies: Various Artists Out Of Norfolk Virginia [Plut #PLUTLP2]

A vinyl only compilation that passed us by when released on 24 Mar has been highlighted via Soul Source this morning.

It consists of rare and unissued songs from Norfolk, VA, titled "Lenis Guess Presents Unbroken Melodies". Only four tracks have been previously released.

Lenis Guess was a singer, songwriter, producer who was an integral part of 'The Norfolk Sound'. He first came to our attention via his big Northern Soul record "Just Ask Me" on Frank Guida's New York based S.P.Q.R. label in 1966 (followed by Legrand).  According to credits, Guida co-wrote the song with Guess but quite often label owners insisted on putting their name on credits whether or not they contributed to the song. Guess died in Oct 2021 aged 81.

Guess co-owned the D.P.G. label which produced another two big Northern soul tunes Prince George's "Wrong Crowd" and a (now) Marmite instrumental "The Gig" by Raw Soul which was big in it's day in the mid 70s. Both of which were included on the firs compilation from Plut "Rare & Unreleased Funk From Norfolk, Virginia 1971 - 1973". back in 2010

NB This Raw Soul is not to be confused with the group that was the forerunner to Frankie Beverly & Maze

Helen Bruner & Terry Jones [2023] - 2nd Overture [Phillerzy Entertainment] (Album Samples)

Grammy nominated songwriters and producers Helen Bruner and Terry Jones release their new album "2nd Overture" next Friday (28 Apr). It's available to pre-order on iTunes.

They have posted a video with samples of four or five of the tracks and from the sound of these it's an essential album. The lead single is "I Can't Call It" and the album includes a new R&B Mix of their last single "At Dinner 32"  (23 Sep 2022).

They own and operate Philerzy Entertainment in Philadelphia, PA, and were Grammy nominated at the 51st Annual Grammy Awards for "Baby I Know" from the Linda Jones album "Soul Talkin'" (2008) for Best Traditional R&B Vocal Performance. The album consists of previously unreleased material from Linda Jones and Bruner & Jones featured on the nominated track and produced the album.

Terry Jones is the daughter of Linda Jones who was sadly taken far too early in 1972 aged only 27 and is still very highly regarded in soul circles.

Carmichael Musiclover [2022] - Black Elvis - Western Eyes Vol 1 & Vol. 2 [One Mic Music] (Album Samples)

We've not heard much from Carmichael Musiclover this year, the duet with Melba Moore in Feb. with "Company" and that's it, but fear not as he has not one, but two, albums due on Thursday (8 Dec 2022).  He's titled them: "Black Elvis - Western Eyes Volume One (A-L)" and "Volume Two (P-Z)" don't ask what happened to M,N & O? They are available for pre-purchase from 25 Nov (links on cover images below).

Both albums contain thirteen tracks and it is the smooth and mellow soul we have come to expect from Carmichael.

Links to samples were posted on 25 Nov, but the albums have now dropped on promo and, as anticipated, it is a superb set on both volumes. Assuming that it is available on digital platforms on Thursday, the full album will be posted then, but normally it's a website release only first and then later made available on the digital platforms, we'll see.

This, I would predict, will be a certain #1 on the UK Soul Chart as there are just so many killer cuts, I'm struggling even to narrow it down to a dozen from the 26 tracks, but here are my picks on a first full listen:

Vol. 1

02 - Bring It Home

04 - Don't Say A Word

05 - Empowering Me

08 - Forgiveness

09 - Happy

10 - Holla

Vol. 2

04 - Take Your Clothes Off

05 - The Last Day Of Summer

06 - The One

07 - Sing

08 - Thug Life

12 - War

I think at present the three favourites are "The Last Day Of Summer", "The One" and "Thug Life" from Vol. 2 .. but that could change such is the wealth of good songs.

For the last two years his albums have been SoulStrutter albums of the year ("Slow Motion" (2021) and "The Best Is Yet To Come" (2020)), perhaps he's managed to squeeze in again this year by the skin of his teeth .. but which volume, or both?
