A vinyl only compilation that passed us by when released on 24 Mar has
been highlighted via Soul Source this morning.
It consists of rare and unissued songs from Norfolk, VA, titled "Lenis Guess Presents Unbroken Melodies". Only four tracks have been previously released.
Lenis Guess was a singer, songwriter, producer who was an integral part
of 'The Norfolk Sound'. He first came to our attention via his big
Northern Soul record "Just Ask Me" on Frank Guida's New York based
S.P.Q.R. label in 1966 (followed by Legrand). According to credits,
Guida co-wrote the song with Guess but quite often label owners insisted on putting their
name on credits whether or not they contributed to the song. Guess died in
Oct 2021 aged 81.
Guess co-owned the D.P.G. label which produced another two big Northern soul tunes Prince George's "Wrong Crowd" and a (now) Marmite instrumental "The Gig" by Raw Soul which was big in it's day in the mid 70s. Both of which were included on the firs compilation from Plut "Rare & Unreleased Funk From Norfolk, Virginia 1971 - 1973". back in 2010
NB This Raw Soul is not to be confused with the group that was the forerunner to Frankie Beverly & Maze
