Harlem, NYC, born Freddie Jackson began his career as the
lead singer with Mystic Merlin in the early 80s, who
recorded three albums for Capitol, before being signed by the label as a
solo artist in 1984. He hit the ground running with his very first solo
single, the title track of his debut album "Rock Me Tonight (For Old Times Sake)" hitting the top spot on the R&B chart in 1985.
He was Grammy nominated that year for Best New Artist, and again the
following year for the follow up single "You Are My Lady". Jackson went on to achieve a slew of hit singles included no fewer
than ten R&B #1 singles between 1985-91. His success on the R&B
chart didn't crossover to the Hot 100 with only eight of his R&B #1
hits (and no others) reaching the Hot 100 with only the first two breaking
the Top 20.
He has released his first new album since 2018 today. The album is titled
"My First Love" and, as we would probably expect from Mr Jackson, it consists of
predominantly ballads with two or three more uptempo tracks.
Our picks are two of the non-ballads, "My First Love" and the funky stepper "I Don't Want You".
