Freddie Hughes v Lonnie Hewitt - Got To Keep My Bluff In

A song written by Lonnie Hewitt but recorded first by Freddie Hughes on Wand. Hewitt later released it on his Wee label in 1977 with a short (3:05) and long (4:20) version. It's the long (album) version featured below which was on his 1977 album 'Keepin' It Together'.

Freddie Hughes [1968/69] - I Got To Keep My Bluff In [Wand #WND 1192/1197]

This track was released twice by Hughes, first in 1968 as the B side to 'Natural Man' (his version of Aretha's classic). and then as an A side in 1969. It was written, arranged and produced by Lonnie Hewitt.

Lonnie Hewitt [1977] - I Gotta' Keep My Bluff In [Wee #484]

Lonnie Hewitt [1969] - Is It Me (Part 1 & 2) [Wee #92272]

Lonnie Hewitt was a pianist who performed with latin jazz vibraphonist Cal Tjader. He set up Wee records in Oakland which ran in the 60s and 70s which primarily released material from himself, Freddie Hughes, and The Ballads (of which Hughes was a member).

It released around 16 singles, many of which have been loved on the UK rare soul scene, such as Ernie Marbury 'Ain't Nobody's Business',  Ballads 'Can't See Your Love', Mary Stallings 'You Gotta Git', Freddie Hughes 'My Baby Came Back''Send My Baby Back', 'Where's My Baby'.

This single was released in 1969 and sounds very similar to another track 'Got To Keep My Bluff In' released by Freddie Hughes in 1968 on Wand and also recorded by Hewitt and released on Wee in 1977.
