Kenny Thomas [2024] - Him [Chrysalis] (Full Album)

Released today is a Kenny Thomas album titled "Him" recorded in 1995 but left unreleased. It was thought to have been lost but the tape has been found in the label archive. 

Thomas has released it ahead of his UK HIM Tour which commences on 16 May where he will perform songs from the album for the first time. Tickets and information from KennyThomasMusic.com (dates on image below).

The title track was leaked (bootlegged?) years later on a white label 12" and became a big modern soul favourite.  It can now be bought legitimately. The only song officially released from the album was "When I Think Of You" as a single which peaked at #27 on the UK pop chart in 1995. There's some other gems on the album such as "Let It Rain" in particular and plenty more. A few, including the single and title track, have been remastered.

Thomas released a "Best of" compilation in Nov '23 and prior to that featured on Ronnie Herel's "The Sun Will Rise Again" (Aug '23). His last solo single was "Got It On Time" in Nov '22.

Kevin Owens feat. Luther Vandross [2024] - You're My Everything [JBR Records / New Image Music Group]

For whatever reason, "You're My Everything" by Kevin Owens has been digitally reissued. It is taken from his 1991 album "That Time Again" and features Luther Vandross along with well known backing singers Ava Cherry, Lisa Fischer, Paulette McWilliams who worked with Vandross over the years.

Owen was also a backing singer for Vandross for 23 years as well as singing backup for many other artists. Curiously, he was also a one time member of Ray, Goodman & Brown (we posted a new single from Billy Brown earlier) replacing Harry Ray in 1982. He was also a member of Revelation up until then. 

In 2014 Owen published a book about his experience with Vandross, "So Amazing Through The Eyes Of Kevin Owens", that is now out of print but seems to sell for large sums on the re-sale market.

Yoyohoney [2024] - Voodoo Soul [Black Sugar Music] (Full Album)

Yoyohoney was duo Anita Jarrett and Mani Shoniwa who released just one album, "Voodoo Soul", in 1992. Their debut single, "Groove On", was a big modern soul spin for London DJ Terry Jones in the late 90s (when re-issued in 1997) and was included on the album. 

Another album has appeared on Amazon on the same day "ABSOLUTION (Bitter Symphony's Gone Black)" which appears to have been released on Bandcamp on 5 Jan '24. Apart from the single "Supernova" (2001) it seems to consist of previously unreleased material.

Stephen Laurence Harvey aka Steve the Scotsman Harvey [2024] - BODY & SOUL [Self Released]

Steve The Scotsman Harvey, originally from Aberdeen, recorded an album "BODY & SOUL" for A&M in the early 90s. He had been signed to the label by renown DJ Jeff Young who headed A&M's A&R dept. Young was moved to another department within MCA and was required to take his acts with him. Unfortunately, the album was deemed too black sounding for the white department and too white sounding for the black department and the album was shelved but was held onto by MCA until last year when they released the masters back to Harvey.

Harvey has now released the album via Bandcamp on 7 Feb '24.

The album was co-written by The Family Stand's Sandra St. Victor who also produced and sang background vocals. Musicians include Rufus' Tony Maiden (guitar), Doc Powell (guitar), Freddie Washinton & Byron Miller (bass), Kirk Whalum, Bridgette Bryant, Portia Griffith, Kedison Kai & Valerie Bailey BGVs).

Rene Geyer and Gary Brown were co writers and also sang BGV's on their respective tracks. Sly Stone attended the session on the song "Lies" 

A couple of tracks are gaining immediate attention, the opener "Mother I Found" and "Peachtree Lane" with some songs now, inevitably, sounding dated. The title track "Body & Soul", for which there is an original music video, still kicks.

Clifton Dyson [2023] - Cupid Shot An Arrow b/w Eye To Eye Contact [Numero Group #NUM2533]

A digital reissue of quite an obscure 1996 recording by Clifton Dyson on Grand Tereze Records. It was released as a Grand Tereze 12" and also appeared on a 1998 album  "'The Sound Of Clifton Dyson'  Mesmerized" on Two Halves Records (vinyl, CD and cassette).

The lead side, "Cupid Shot An Arrow", is a falsetto led sweet soul ballad with "Eye To Eye Contact" being more of a rap driven new jack swing style sound.

MoKenStef [2023] - Azz Is [Outburst Records] (Full Album) Digital Reissue

Appearing on digital platforms yesterday is a digital reissue of "Azz Is" which is the only album recorded by 90s L.A. girl trio MoKenStef.

The group was named after its three members Monifa Bethune, Kenya Hadley and Stef (Stephanie) Sinclair who released their album in 1995. It produced three singles "Sex In The Rain", "Baby Come Close" (a Smokey Robinson song from his debut solo album "Smokey" in 1973) and "He's Mine" which was a #2 R&B / #7 Hot 100 hit and samples Zapp "Be Alight" and Prince "Do Me Baby". 

The opening track / intro on the digital release (tracks are in a different order to the original album)  "Stop Callin' Me" uses Rose Royce' s "Love Don't Live Here Anymore" as the backing.

A further single "He Say / She Say" was released in 1999 from a planned sophomore album that didn't materialise. A final release was "I Got Him All The Time" (a remix of "He's Mine") on a four track promo/sampler on Def Jam in 2000 before the trio disbanded in 2003.

They reunited in 2014 with the idea of writing a book of their music business experience which also inspired then to get back in the studio. The book "Unfinished Business" was published in 2020 which is perhaps why the album has been reissued?

Angel Sessions [2022] - Wait for Me [Self Released]

Angel Sessions is an urban gospel artist from Louisville, KT, now resident in L.A. She was signed to Ichiban records in 1998 and released around four secular albums before switching to gospel and has, to date, released eighteen albums.

Her last single "You Missed a Good Thing" was released 18 Mar 2022 which was a song originally released on her debut album "Introducing... Angel Sessions" in 1998. She released another 'new' single "Wait for Me" yesterday (29 Jul 2020) and like the one earlier in the year is a song from the 90s originally released on her second album "Love Ride" in 1999. A video for the song premieres on YouTube ay 22:00 (BST/UK Time).

Angel has performed with Lenny Williams, The Delfonics, The Stylistics, Brenda Holloway, Freda Payne, Ali Woodson ( The Temptation), The Dells, Mary Wilson (she toured with May Wilson as a Supreme), The Dramatics, L.J. Reynolds ( lead singer of the Dramatics), Maurice White (Earth Wind and Fire), James Brown, Teena Marie, Tamia, Montel Jordan, H Town, The Whispers and Eric Benet
