Troop [2023] - So In Love [The Motel Music Media]

Troop has reissued a cover of Leroy Hutson's 1973 single (his first after after leaving The Impressions), "So In Love With You", originally released on their 1998 album "Mayday".

Troop (Total Respect of Other People) is a New Jack Swing group formed in Pasadena, CA, in 1987 who recorded five albums and had three #1 R&B hits and a further two Top 10 entries.

After the "Mayday" album in 1998 they took a hiatus but regrouped in 2004. Original member Reggie Warren died in March 2021 aged 52 but the remaining four members continue to perform.

The  Motel Music Media, on which this single is released, is  owned by group member Steve Russell.

Corey Glover [1998] - Little Girl [LaFace #RCD-6048]

Corey Glover was (and still is) the lead vocalist of Living Color formed in the 80s. He released a debut solo album in 1998 "Hymns" and a track called "Little Girl" became an unlikely modern soul masterpiece. I say unlikely as, if you listen to the rest of the album, it is nothing like this particular track with many being rock/pop oriented along with a few southern soul/bluesy ballads.

As well as finding a live rendition of "Little Girl" I also found a live performance of Marvin Gaye's "Let's Get It On".

Angel Sessions [2022] - You Missed a Good Thing [Atlas Elite]

Angel Sessions is an urban gospel artist from Louisville, KT, now resident in L.A. She was signed to Ichiban records in 1998 and released around four secular albums before switching to gospel and has, to date, released eighteen albums.

Her latest single "You Missed a Good Thing" was released last Friday (18 Mar 2022) and sounds like a bit of a 90s throwback to my ears and, 'oh dear', a rap kicks in at around 2:37! I thought it was a bit of an odd single (for 2022) and had a dig around and, right enough, the track was released on her debut album "Introducing... Angel Sessions" in 1998, but as they say, 'I've started so I'll finish' as there's not much else around!

Angel has performed with Lenny Williams, The Delfonics, The Stylistics, Brenda Holloway, Freda Payne, Ali Woodson ( The Temptation), The Dells, Mary Wilson (she toured with May Wilson as a Supreme), The Dramatics, L.J. Reynolds ( lead singer of the Dramatics), Maurice White (Earth Wind and Fire), James Brown, Teena Marie, Tamia, Montel Jordan, H Town, The Whispers and Eric Benet.

Rahsaan Patterson [1998] - Where You Are (Silk's Old Skool Mix) [Universal #WMCST 48073]

Rahsaan Patterson was discovered on a US talent show 'Junior Star Search' around 1984 and then won a part in TV series Kids Incorporated. In 1986 he won a follow up show 'Star Search' aged 12.

He released his debut, self-titled, album in 1997. This was the second single from the album which was released with several mixes ranging from an acoustic mix to a deep house mix. The mix that was favoured on UK modern soul dancefloors was Silk's Old Skool Mix.

Chaka Khan & Prince [1998] - Sweet Thing [Live @ Cafe De Paris, London]

I'm posting some 'randon' stuff today as new releases have all but dried up.

This is a live performance by Chaka Khan with Prince in 1998 (28 Aug) at Cafe de Paris in London.  It is arguably her best known 70s song, 'Sweet Thing', which was her second highest charting single with Rufus in US (#5) in 1975, after 'Tell Me Something Good' (#3) the previous year.

'The Artist (formerly known as Prince)', as he liked to be referred then, co-produced, and co-wrote 11 of the 14 tracks, on Chaka Khan's 1998 album 'Come 2 My House'.

Her 1984 hit 'I Feel For You' was written by Prince and he originally recorded it in 1979 on his second, self-titled, album.

Atlantic Starr [1998] - You [Sound #00034]

Here's a great little obscure track from a 1998 album 'All Because Of You' from Atlantic Starr. Several of the tracks were released on 'Legacy', a UK release on Expansion in 1998, with some additional tracks, but 'You' on the Legacy release was a shorter version.

It's a sort of timeless track. It doesn't sound specifically like a 90s track, it could have been released anywhere from mid 80s onwards.

Phil Perry [1998] - Mind Blowah [Private Music #01005-82163-2]

More great music from Phil Perry taken from his third album 'One Love One Heart' album 1998.

I hope I can turn anyone, who as yet is unfamiliar with his music, onto him, as, I hope you'll agree from the several posts I've done on him already, that his vocal prowess is magnificent.

Whilst he's highly respected and sought after as a session singer within the industry, and by soul aficionados, his name outside soul circles is relatively unknown, even though he has been recording since 1969 and still going strong as his last (his 12th) solo album, 'Breathless', was released in 2017 and he is currently working on a new album.
