China Burton [2024] - You Don't Care (About Our Love) [Soul Brother #12 SBT 46]

A 12" reissue of China Burton's one-off single originally released in 1979 on Logo was pressed by Soul Brother for Record Store Day 2024.  Soul Brother reissued it on 7" for the first time in 2022. The long version has been previously reissued on 12" in Holland by Kindred Spirit in 2010.

The Soul Brother 12" reissue is a carbon copy of the original 12" with long, short and instrumental versions of "You Don't Care (About Our Love)" which now sell for up to £400.

The song was covered by Yam Who? Feat. Norman Anderson in 2007 (video below).

Mark 'China" Burton also co-wrote a song "Do You Want It Right Now" with Nick Straker recorded first by Siedah Garrett in 1985 and covered by Taylor Dayne in 1987 and Degrees In Motion in 1992.

Note that only the short version is available to buy digitally.

Winfield Parker [2024] - I Wanna Be With You / My Love For You [Celestial Echo Records #CER001]

The last secular recording by Winfield Parker was in 1979 on his own P&L (P(arker) & L(yles) his manager at the time) label.

The official top side "My Love For You" was a re-recording of his first single on Ru-Jac in 1963 which we suspect was far too dated to make any impact in 1979 but the flip, 'I Wanna Be With You', is regarded as a modern soul anthem in the UK. In the 80s he turned to gospel music. Only one album is listed for him, a gospel album, "Miracles", in 2005.

Both sides of the P&L single have been reissued digitally by Celestial Echo Preservation Group and are available via Bandcamp.

We did a feature on Winfield Parker on his death in Jan 2021 if you wish to learn a little more about his career. There's also a more detailed account HERE based on an interview with David Cole (In The Basement) in 2004.

A little teaser, he was originally lined up by Otis Redding to be the vocalist for the 60s classic "Sweet Soul Music" but owing to a mix up of recording venues, Redding told him to go to Cincinnati instead of Muscle Shoals, Arthur Conley, who had been opening for Parker's shows and was already in Muscle Shoals, got to record the song instead!

Tommy Tate [2024] - I Can't Do Enough For You Baby / Hold On (To What We've Got) [Soul4Real #S4R33]

A respected name in rare soul circles, but barely known outside, is Tommy Tate. Tate was born in Florida in 1944 and had only three singles register on the R&B charts between 1972-76, none of which you would say are particularly well known, "School Of Life", "Hardtimes S.O.S." and "If You Ain't Man Enough".

His recording career dates back earlier to 1965 with a debut single for ABC-Paramount. He released a couple of singles for Chicago's Okeh label in 1966 after two in groups, Tommy & The Derbys and Tim Winslett & The Imperial Band. A few more appeared on different labels before his most productive period at Johnny Baylor's KoKo label beginning in 1971 (after a brief spell with The Nightingales when Ollie Hoskins decided to go solo) where he had all three of his R&B hits.

By the end of the 70s he switched to Frederick Knight's Juana label where he released a self-titled album in 1981 and then a few singles on Sundance. Another album appeared on Tim Whitsett's Urgent in 1990. Several compilation are available from Kent, P-Vine and Soundscape.

Alex Subina's Soul4Real Records has selected two tracks from his debut album, "Hold On", which he recorded at Malaco in the late 70s but was left unreleased. Without his knowledge, it was released by Malaco in Japan in 1979 (and later reissued on CD in 2014, 2018 and 2019, again only in Japan).

The songs are the title track, "Hold On" written by Tate and first recorded by James Carr on Atlantic in 1971 (which was Carr's last recording). The other is possibly one of his most in-demand songs "I Can't Do Enough For You Baby" which has only appeared on 7" vinyl previously via a 2014 reissue by Austrian label Record Shack. Tate died in Jan 2017 aged 71.

Available to pre-order now from Soul4Real for release on 1st March 2024.

Chuck Cissel [1979] - Just For You [Arista #AB 4527] (Full Album)

Tucked away of the B side to Chuck Cissel's highest (of only three) charting singles "Cisselin' Hot", is a tune that got some spins on the modern soul scene, "Do You Believe".

Both are taken from his first of only two albums, "Just for You", in 1979 produced by Skip Scarborough. He followed it with the now sought after "Don't Tell Me I'm Sorry". Both sides were reissued together on 7" by Expansion in UK in 2018.

We were just going to post "Do You Believe" but, after listening to the full album again, there are some other good underplayed tunes on it e.g. "Emergency" and "I've Been Needing Love So Long".

Cissel, now 74, started out performing on Broadway shows, so perhaps that explains why he released just two albums and perhaps, owing to the success of "Cisselin' Hot", became labelled as a disco artist? His second album, whilst containing a superb version of The Dell's "Love Is Missing From Our Lives" (written by Tony Hester) and a minor R&B hit with Marva King on the title track, a MORish ballad "If I Had A Chance", was a commercial failure and was ultimately his last album.

Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes feat. Sharon Paige [2023] - Prayin’ / Baby I’m Back [Demon Music Group]

Harold Melvin and The Blue Notes chart success waned after the departure of Teddy Pendergrass in 1975 and they left Philadelphia International in 1976. They released two albums on ABC in 1976-77 and a third, "The Blue Album", on Source in 1979.

The Northern Soul scene pounced on "Prayin'", written by McFadden & Whitehead, which was a huge sound and still gets played today. It was released as a single on three occasions each with different B sides (i.e. "Your Love Is Taking Me On A Journey", "Praying inst." and as the flip to "I Should Be Your Lover") making it easy and cheap to find.

However, Demon Music Group has reissued it on Friday digitally and on vinyl, flipped with "Baby I’m Back", previously an album only track. Both tracks have been remastered by Phil Kinrade.

The lead singer is David Ebo who had the unenviable task of replacing Pendergrass. We did a feature on him last year on 9 Nov which would have been his 72nd birthday on which we posted "Praying'".

Stephen Encinas [2023] - Disco Illusion (Club Mix) [Westside Studio]

A couple of weeks ago we came across a reissue of a 1979 singe by Stephen Encinas. "Rock-a-bye baby love" / "Music In Me". We noted that his only other recording was a 12" dance single "Disco Illusion" which we said must have been a big in-demander 'somewhere' as an original sells for £2k and it had been reissued numerous times incluidng a digital release of both sides in 2014 (also included below).

"Disco Illusion (Club Mix)" has also been released digitally. Both singles were originally released on Trinidad & Tobago label Kalinda in 1979.

Stephen Encinas [2023] - Rock-a-bye baby love / Music In Me [Westside Studio]

A reissue on a 1979 West Indian recording on Kalinda based in Trinidad & Tobago by Stephen Encinas. It would seem that he only released this and another 12" single "Disco Illusion" which must be in-demand somewhere as one has sold on Discog for almost £2k and it has been reissued numerous times since 2013 in Canada and Italy.

The single featured here also commands three figures with only two currently for sale for between £160-£190. The single was dedicated to International Year Of The Child hence the title "Rock-a-bye baby love" which is a mid tempo ballad as is the flip "Music In Me".

The cover image is a mirror image of the original label and states that this is a 2023 remix but having taken a listen to the original version on YouTube doesn't sound significantly different, possibly more a remaster than a remix?

Chuck Brown & The Soul Searchers [2023] - Never Gonna Give You Up (Radio Edit) [Diplomats Of Soul]

Dropped on Bandcamp last week is an edit of Chuck Brown & The Soul Searchers' 1979 cover of Jerry Butler's "Never Gonna Give You Up". It was initially released on their Source album "Bustin' Loose" with the 5:43 album version being released as a single. The new Edit is 4:20.

The song is an evergreen written by Butler along with Gamble & Huff and has been covered many times including by Gene Chandler, Eddie Floyd, Shirley & The Shirelles, Isaac Hayes, Lyn Collins and Michael Henderson to name a few.

It's out on vinyl on Expansion's Diplomats of Soul imprint, we think as a Record Store Day release given the cat. no. is 7RSDDOS1.

Georgie Fame [1979] - Sitting In The Park [Pye #N 119]

Continuing the Billy Stewart theme, I received an email from our good friend Bill Buckley of SoulAndJazzAndFunk in response to the Remembering Billy Stewart post yesterday.

He attached this version of "Sitting In The Park" by Georgie Fame, which I'd seen listed but, incorrectly, assumed it was simply a rerun of his 1966 cover. However, it is a later re-recording from his 1979 album "That's What Friends Are For" which is a completely different arrangement of the song and is a very nice version and thought it was well worth sharing. So you have Bill to thank if you were not previously aware of this version. It still sounds very fresh to these ears, proving that good quality music never goes out of fashion.

In contrast, also posted below, is his faithful original cover version from 1966.

Coco & Ben [2023] Good Feelin' / See The World (As It Is [Athens Of The North #AOTN12019]

The second AOTN reissue is another in-demand modern soul tune, a one-off private press by Coco & Ben out of Memphis, TN, with "Good Feelin'" which was originally the B side to "See The World (As It Is)".

However, this is a previously unreleased, slightly longer take, than the original for which AOTN acquired the tapes direct from Ben (Robinson) and have released it on 12". The song was written by Ben and Richard Carl Watson and Coco is a female singer I'm not able to find much about and this may be her only recording.

The recording seems to be a private press on Earth World (no other releases) from 1979 and when it was originally discovered in the UK it was covered up as Barbara St Clair. None have ever sold on Discogs and the last one to sell listed on Popsike went for just over $2k ($2,032) in Feb 2022.

Both side were reissued by Garry J. Cape on Hit And Run only in 2020 but, as said, this is a different take.

If you need convincing how good both sides are then here's an extract from top rare soul dealer John Manship's upload on YouTube:

"Coco is about to take you on a journey into one of the finest 70's Soul tunes ever recorded. Served up by an astonishingly soulful vocal of the very highest quality, supported by a pouting baritone sax and a soaring flute; that heady cocktail is utterly intoxicating but still that exquisitely tortured leading lady steals the show; achingly mesmerizing as Coco steadily ascending the scales until the long-hold of the climax induces a body-spray of goose-bumps, you just can't prepare for.

Not only Utterly BRILLIANT but unparalleled in the world of D.I.Y. Soul Sister creations.

How on earth a record of this breath-taking quality can ever start life as a flipside is bemusing; this is a distilled Soul dancer of the very highest order. but then flip it over and you start to understand why, as the other side is only a smidgen off being every note as good.

A back to back winners guaranteeing a euphoric dancefloor uplift every time. which ever side to drop the needle on.

The very best of 70's rare Soul that leaves you breathless."

Available to pre-order on 12" vinyl from Bandcamp for release on 27 Jan 2023. Definitely do not sleep on this one as these won't be around for long.

Bileo [2023] - You Can Win / Let You Go [Athens Of The North #ATH006]

A batch of new vinyl and digital releases have just been announced by Euan Fryer's excellent Athens Of The North label.

The first to feature is a repress of a popular (and pricey) modern soul tune "You Can Win" / "Let You Go" by Bileo originally released in 1979 on M.T.U. / Watts City records. Only one original orange label original is listed for sale on Discogs with an eye-watering asking price of £900. So do yourself a favour and grab one of the AOTN represses before they are gone as they will surely fly off the shelves. Available now via Bandcamp.

The label reissued it in Sep 2014 and again in 2015 with another repress in 2016 so I believe that this is the third repress, and the demand is obviously there for it and AOTN states that 'it sells itself".

Bileo were formed in 1979 consisting of  Bill Williams (Eijah Williams Jr.), Bobby Love, Joe Fornis and Maceo Jackson and released only one further single as Bill Williams & Bileo ("Robot People" / "Things Will Be Better Tomorrow") which 45Cat list as 1983.

Centaura Feat. Jewel Bass [2022] - I Need Love / Just Don't Love You [Creative Soul #CS-1003]

The new vinyl boutique label Creative Soul has so far released two singles, a couple of previously unreleased tracks (except for appearing on a 90s CD compilation) from Ruby Winters and two sides from Southern Soul veteran Don Bryant.

Their next release is perhaps the most interesting. It will consist of two tracks taken from a 1979 album "Lawdy, Lawdy, Lawd" by a group named Centaura from Bimingham, AL, who won the Budweiser showdown in their home town in 1983 and as a result featured on one of the Budweiser Showdown singles "Your Love Is All I Need" which was the prize for winning the competition.

However, before that in 1978 they cut an album for Atlanta based Equity Recording Co. which was released in 1979. It was produced by Bob S Riley (Robert Stanley Riley Sr). Now this is where it gets intriguing as he is credited as co-writing  "Just Walkin' In The Rain" by The Prisonaires with his then co-inmate Johnny Bragg at Tennessee State Prison (Nashville, TN).  Riley wasn't a member of the group and in fact Bragg wrote the song and Riley got songwriter's credits for transcribed it as Bragg couldn't read or write. The Prisonaires had a minor hit with the song which was recorded on Sam Phillips' Sun Records in 1952. It was later recorded by Johnnie Ray in 1956 who had a million seller with it reaching #1 UK and #2 US. In 1967 Johnny Bragg recorded "They're Talking About Me" on Elbejay which went on to become a Northern Soul monster in the mid 70s.

The Centaura album was reissued in 2013 by Numero Group who Creative Soul has licensed the tracks from. They have selected "I Need Love" / "Just Don't Love You" to issue as a 7" single. The latter was recorded as The Carbon Copies on Atlanta's Git Down, Inc. and got a UK release on Grapevine in 2002 flipped with "Baby Coming Home". Riley is on writing credits with Jewel Bass on the top side with Bass credited with the flip.

Annie 'Jewel' Bass was the female lead singer in the group, apparently gaining the name Jewel from her "jewel" voice. She released four singles on Malaco between 1973-79 and in 2010 Garry Cape put out a dozen of her recordings (all her singles and six unreleased songs) on a Soulscape CD  "Malaco Soul Sisters" along with nine tracks by Dorothy Moore.

Bass also sang with artists such as Z.Z. Hill,  Denise LaSalle, Bobby Bland, King Floyd, Jean Knight, Little Milton, Johnnie Taylor Anita Ward, Fern Kinney.

Whilst the The Carbon Copies track features on the album I'm not entirely sure that they are in fact the same group. It is believed that the track was tacked onto the end of the album by producer Riley, although it appears that it is clearly Jewel Bass on vocals.

No date of release has been given as yet but watch this space

Wayne Henderson [1979] - Dancin' Love Affair [Polydor #PD 2013]

Ex Crusader trombonist Wayne Henderson would have been celebrating his 83rd birthday today (he died in 2014 aged 74).

He co-founded The Jazz Crusaders in 1961, who later became just The Crusaders,  leaving in 1976 to pursue a solo career.

One of his greatest tunes was "Dancing' Love Affair" in 1979 which featured (uncredited on the single) ex Dramatic Ron Banks on vocals. Unbelievably, it never even registered on the R&B chart!

Victor Willis [2015] - Follow Through [Harlem West Records #HWRCD 1001]

I don't think you would ever guess from this song that Victor Willis was a member of the Village People (he was the one dressed as a Police/Naval officer).  There was no such group initially as it was a studio project formed by a couple of French producers who recruited Willis to sing background vocals on some songs they had written. They released the first eponymously titled album Village People (taking the name from the Manhattan's Greenwich Village) and such was it's success that they they had to find members for live appearances and several dancers were recruited to dance around Willis.

The song "Follow Through" is from his only solo album "Solo Man" released on CD in 2015. However it was a previously unreleased album recorded for Casablanca in 1979 after he left Village People. You have to ask how on earth something of this quality could be left in the can for 36 years? It still sounds fresh to me now 43 years later!

It seems that after Willis' departure from the group, who were also signed to Casablanca, their sales plummeted and the label dropped them. Willis' contract was still with Village People and apparently the album got caught up in the contractual wrangles. Willis eventually got the rights to the tapes in 1981 and then they went missing reappearing in 2007.

Whilst the album was eventually released in 2015, as of 2019 it is no longer available on CD or digital, so to find one you'll need to search the second hand market (none currently available on Discogs). There are another three half decent ballads ("I Struck It Rich", "Could It Be You" and "Yes I Can"), but the rest of the material, as you may expect, is quite lame disco stuff.

The sound clip from YouTube is the full 5:54 album version. I believe that a sub 4 min Radio Edit may have been released.

Thanks to Gary Van Den Bussche for playing this on his lunchtime Starpoint Radio show last week which is what has prompted its posting.

Silk [1979] - I Can't Stop (Turning You On) [PIR #ZS9 3730] v LF System [2022] - Afraid To Feel [Warner]

If you have had the misfortune to listen to national radio anytime in the last couple of weeks you will undoubtedly have heard a mash-up topping the UK pop chart by LF System which bastardises this modern soul classic from Silk. All fine and dandy if the song's writers, or families in case of at least one (Joseph Jefferson) now deceased, see a red cent for it!

Silk started out as Ujima in the early 70s changing their name to Anglo Saxon Brown in 1976 becoming Silk by 1979. Their lead female singer was Debra Henry who is the aunt of Nicole Henry who has featured here several times in recent months.

The new song that samples "I Can't Stop (Turning You On)" (released on Philadelphia International in 1979) is by LF System titled "Afraid To Feel" and I've counted at least nine different mixes of it.

The song has been posted here previously but worth another post to remind you what it 'should' sound like and I may as well post one of the new versions (the main version) for those who have been lucky enough to miss it ... why should the rest of us suffer alone? It has been speeded up and sounds like Mickey Mouse on speed!

It has been on the UK chart for 8 weeks (since 9 Jun) and has been #1 for the last 3 weeks!
