Yesterday Jody Watley celebrated her (whisper it) 65th
birthday and released a new single "Everlasting" co-written and co-produced with Rodney Lee and mixed by Italian DJ, producer, remixer Alex Di
Ciò.
Born in Chicago in 1959, she is the God daughter of the great Jackie
Wilson. Jody made her breakthrough dancing on the legendary TV show Soul
Train at the tender age of 14. The show's creators Dick Griffey and host Don
Cornelius drafted Jody and fellow Soul Train dancer Jeffrey Daniel to join
Gary Mumford to create Shalamar. Mumford was replaced by Gerald Brown
for the group's second album, who in turn was replaced by Howard Hewett in
1979 and that classic trio went on to have a string of UK Pop chart
hits such as "Second Time Around", Right In The Socket", I Owe You One",
"Make That Move", I Can Make You Feel Good", A Night To Remember", "There It
Is", "Friends".
Watley and Daniel left the group before the release of the group's seventh
album, "The Look", in 1983 and Watley moved to England for a couple of years
(appearing on Band Aid single in 1985) before returning to the states. She
released her eponymous solo debut album in 1987 with the lead single
"Looking For A New Love" becoming her first solo hit. The album topped the
R&B chart and reached #10 on Hot 100.
Jody won a Grammy for Best New Artist in 1988 and was also nominated
for Best R&B Vocal Performance, Female the same year for "Looking For A New Love". She has released around ten studio albums with the latest being "Paradise" in
2014.
In 2008 she received Billboard's Lifetime Achievement Award and last year began hosting her own monthly radio show on Sirius XM Satellite Radio.
