VA [2023] - Philly Groove Records Presents: Deeper In The Groove [Philly Groove Records] (Full Album)

A remastering of a 2014 compilation with two addition tracks from the vaults of Philly Groove records titled "Philly Groove Records Presents: Deeper In The Groove" was released on 7 Apr '23.

It consists of four tracks from Flashlight's eponymous, and only, album from 1978 along with three tracks from Quickest Way Out who actually evolved into Flashlight in 1978. Two of the tracks were released on singles for Warner Brothers in 1975/76, the other "Ain't Easy" appears to be unreleased. Surprisingly, Flashlight's best known and loved track, "Beware She's Pulling My Strings" isn't included.

There are two songs from recently deceased (Dec '21) David Lasley, his debut single which is a cover of The Chiffons "One Fine Day" and the self-written flip "Merry-Go-Round".

Finishing Touch released just two singles for Philly Groove with their modern soul 'anthem' "Second Best (Is Never Enough)" featuring on both along with, initially, "Your Love Has Put A Spell On Me" and then as the flip to "Sunshine And Promises". The other track included on the compilation by them, "Don't Put Me Down", was  left in the vaults but has re-emerged over the years on several compilations and was subjected to several remixes in 2014.

All 14 tracks above appeared on the first compilation in 2014 which have been remastered and two additional tracks included for the latest release. The two new tracks are Tapestry's 1973 single "Big Stone Wall (Around Your Heart)" and Broadway Express 1972 B side "Puff Puff (You're Gone)".

Many of the tracks have featured on other Philly Groove compilations and, to be frank, are probably not the best examples of the label's output barring Finishing Touch's "Second Best (Is Never Enough)". The label ran from from late 1967 to mid 1974 releasing just short of 50 singles predominantly by The Delfonics and First Choice.
