The next release on Hit And Run is a reissue of, coincidentally, a pair
of Ollie McLaughlin productions (as only just mentioned in the Deon Jackson compilation post) for The Compacts originally
released in 1973 on
Carla. Garry Cape, the maestro behind the label, states that this is the first
in a series from the catalogue of Ollie McLaughlin. Garry also suggests that many of the Carla copies
suffered from bad pressing which has led to it's scarcity, as well as it
being an in-demander for both the UK rare soul scene and the California
lowrider scene.
The lead side "Why Can It Be" (which was in fact the original B side (i.e. Carla 102)) was written by
group member Gary Brown who went on to become a member of Family Brown with
his siblings. The official A Side (Carla 101) "That's How My World Began" was co-written by Ernie Harwell (another Deon Jackson connection as he
also co-wrote "You'll Wake Up Wiser") and Will Hatcher who was the brother
of Roger Hatcher and Edwin Starr's (Charles Hatchers) cousin.

These 2 fantastic tracks also appeared in 1984 on the magnificent Detroit Gold Volume 1 compilation (Solid Smoke Records) with all the cream of Karen, Carla & Moira Records. There is also an equally good Volume 2.
