The second volume of Stax Southern Soul was released on 26 Mar 2021. It
follows volume one issued by Kent in 2012.
The compilation includes several previously unreleased tracks, alternate
takes and obscure B sides all recorded by Stax artists, mainly in the
70s.
Why buy digital for £10.29 when you can get the CD for £11.50 directly from Ace/Kent with all the sleeve notes and photos?
The album kicks off with a track by William Bell (real name Yarbrough) who reactivated Stax in
2016 and won a Grammy award (Best Americana Album) in 2017 for 'This Is
Where I Live' album. He has also just become a NEA (National
Endowment for the Arts) Heritage Fellow in 2020. It is criminal to acknowledge that after 64 years in the music business (he is now 81 and released his first single in 1957 with Th Del-Rios) he has only
achieved three Top 40 hits, in UK 1968 with 'Tribute To A King' (which was
actually a B side) and his duet with Judy Clay on 'Private Number' and
1975 in US
with 'Trying To Love Two'. However, he has over 750 writing/arranging credits to his name.
For what it's worth I've flagged my five favourute tracks with #, but
everyone has their own taste. For the featured track I've gone with Eddie Floyd's previously unreleased 'How Can I Win Your Love'.
