The Rance Allen Group [2022] - I Feel Like Going On / Can’t Get Enough [Expansion #EXS034]

For me, Rance Allen had one of the greatest voices in soul/gospel music. He formed The Rance Allen Group with his brothers Tom and Steve and, after releasing a debut single on Reflect in 1969 and winning a talent competition, they were signed to Stax where they began recording on the Gospel Truth imprint from 1972. 

After four albums they moved to Capitol in 1977 returning to the Stax main imprint in 1979. Their second album after their return was "I Feel Like Going On" (1980) produced by Ronnie McNeir.

Two tracks from it, "I Feel Like Going On" and "Can’t Get Enough", which have only been available as album tracks, are getting their first 7" vinyl release on Expansion.

The Rance Allen Group [2021] - Stay With Me / Living Witness [Jai Alai #JAR01]

Jai Alai (pronounced Hi-Uh-Li) is a new label set up by Alex Subinas who also runs Soull4Real.  Two new 45s have just been released. The first from The Rance Allen Group, the other by Ursula Ricks which I'll post separately.

The two tracks selected for release on vinyl come from their, CD only, 2002 album on Tyscot "All The Way".

"Stay With Me" has been an in-demand modern soul tune in the UK for many years and is now available for the first time on vinyl 45. It has been coupled with "Living Witness".

The Rance Allen Group [2021] - Love Makes The World Go Around [Tyscott Records]

We lost one of the greatest gospel voices in the world just last October (tribute here) but his music will always be with us. I'm not quite sure of the provenance of this posthumously released tune (10 Sep 2021) from The Rance Allen Group "Love Makes The World Go Around". I don't believe that it has been previously released but will concede if you know otherwise. It certainly sounds like it was recorded in his later years.

It's superb, ultra deep, gospel soul delivered as only he can. If this song doesn't move you then I think you may need to check your pulse, or you're just on the wrong site! Dance music of black orientation is all well and good but THIS is 'real' soul music which I think is good to be reminded of occasionally to prevent the proliferation of tunes that are 'vaguely' soulful or soul like. I think I may start using a new term 'soul-lite'!

Yet another nod to the musical taste of Mark Merry and Paul Regan for this one heard on his excellent Soul Sermon show last week.
