The R&R Soul Orchestra [2024] - When You Come Back [The American R&B Company]

Our friend Julio Herrera of The R&R Soul Orchestra has just posted an edit of  "When You Come Back", a song the band recorded in 2018.

He tells us that it's from an album "Live from a Basement in Queens" and that the band is getting ready for live performances.

The song includes Valerie Kelley on lead vocals, Saxy Ric on Soprano Sax, Cecil Sanchez on bass, Carlos Sanchez on guitar, Ralph Roper on percussion and Julio on keys.

If you wish to learn a little more about Julio and R&R Soul Orchestra then Steve Aggasild interviewed him for us in Sep '22.

The R&R Soul Orchestra [2023] - Heavenly Redux [The American R&B Company]

The new single from Julio Herrera's The R&R Soul Orchestra, released yesterday (14 Feb '23) is a new, 'beefed up', version of "Heavenly" from 2020, retitled "Heavenly Redux". Both versions are included below so you can hear the difference.

Julio tells us "I thought it needed more, especially after listening to Baker, Harris & Young productions such as Double Exposure "Ten Percent" and a lot of Salsoul Orchestra and generally the Philly sound".

Last Sep ('22) Steve Aggasild caught up with Julio following the superb last single "Moods" which featured in many end-of-year playlist selections. If you missed the interview then you can view it HERE.

In conversation with Julio Herrera of The R&R Soul Orchestra

Steve Aggasild (SoulAndJazzFlavas) in association with SoulStrutter in conversation with Julio Herrera the leader of The R&R Soul Orchestra on Sat 3rd Sep 2022.

Julio has been a friend of the blog for quite a while (since posting this feature on them in Jan 2021) and has been keen to do an interview so who better to conduct it than one of the most experienced soul radio presenters in the UK 'The Soul Master' Steve Aggasild who has 40 year experience in soul radio.

Something that will surprise most of us is The R&R Soul Orchestra's recent UK soul chart smash hit single "Moods" was actually written 25 years ago in 1997!

They released a self titled album The R&R Soul Orchestra in 2015 which Julio says in interview 'rolled' off the digital platforms so he remastered it and re-released it in the last week or so. NB the album doesn't contain "Moods".

The R&R Soul Orchestra [2022] - The R&R Soul Orchestra (ReMastered 2022) [The American R&B Company] (Full Album)

A 'new', self-titled,  album by The R&R Soul Orchestra was released on 22 Aug 2022. It appears to consist of  earlier material, some released, some unreleased but most tracks feature on their YouTube channel. It transpires that the album was originally released in 2015 but had been removed from the DSPs, so the group's leader Julio Herrera decided to remaster it and re-promote it.

The R&R Soul Orchestra are from Queens, NY, and are led by Julio Herrera. Several of their releases have been featured here, with their last single "Moods" causing quite a stir which may be what has prompted the release of this album consisting of earlier material.

Here's the track listing with a rough guide to when each track first appeared

01 - Call on Me (2016) 7"
02 - The Luckiest Man in the World (2014)
03 - Meaningless (2016) (Roy Ayers "Running Away" sample)
04 - I'm Gonna Tell Her feat. Onaje Allan Gumbs (2016) (The Jacksons "Enjoy Yourself" sample)
05 - I'm Sorry (2015) (2018) 7"
06 - Wantcha (2016)
07 - I Want Your Loving feat. Alyson Williams
08 - Why (Theme from Valley of the Dolls) (2016)
09 - Vision
10 - Have You Ever feat. Nicholas Payton (2015)
11 - Hello It's Me feat. Ronnie Drayton
12 - When You Need Someone feat. Alyson Williams (2016)

The R&R Soul Orchestra [2022] - Moods [The American R&B company]

The R&R Soul Orchestra are from Queens, NY, and are led by Julio Herrera. I did a post on them back in Jan 2021 featuring several of their recordings. At the time I thought they were from Canada on the basis that their early recordings were only released in Canada, but they are based in New York.

Their latest single is "Moods" with a recorded release date of 21 Jun 2022, however, I suspect that it is another of those that may have actually been released later as it only materialised this weekend (and was only posted on their YouTube channel on 27 Jun) and surely something as good as this would have been spotted sooner?

It is quite possibly (definitely?) one of their best to date.

The current line-up of The R&R Soul Orchestra includes leader Julio Herrera (keyboards, bass, drum programming, composer, arranger, audio engineer, mix engineer, mastering engineer), Valerie Kelley (lead and background vocals), Veronica Daeh (lead and background vocals), Scout Ford (lead and background vocals), Leslie Ming (lead and background vocals), Laree Williams (all lead and background vocals), Roy Bennett lead vocals) and Cecil Sanchez (bass, keyboards, drum programing, audio engineer, sound design mix Engineer, co-producer).

Julio Herrera was born to Honduran immigrant parents on July 31, 1961 in Harlem, New York.  He began his life in entertainment as a child actor having appeared on Broadway and filming commercials many which have been nationally televised. When Julio was 16 he did  voiceover commercials which led him to visit and record in the  the famous A&R Recording studios in Manhattan. There is where he began his musical journey. He fell in love with everything from writing to recording, from arranging to producing and engineering. “I loved everything about recording especially recording my compositions”. Julio has worked with many of New York's top session musicians, including being a audio engineer for Jam Master Jay of The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame rap group Run DMC. Soon after the death of Jam Master Jay, Julio took a step back and refocused his energy from hip-hop to making high quality R&B records. At 29 he became A&R associate for Capital/EMI in Montreal, Canada. During his time working there he began developing a sound which he developed into the act 'The R&R Soul Orchestra'. He moved back to New York when he was 33 and begin audio engineering independently for several NY musicians and Studios. At 35 he was signed to RCA under 'The R&R Soul Orchestra'. Unfortunately RCA shelved the album which led to Julio releasing it 12 years later, this time under his own label.  The self titled debut was released in 2015 with a lot of support and  love  from the UK.  Currently he is working on the second album release 'Live From a Basement in Queens'. Julio still resides in New York City running his own recording studio, production house and label.
