Mountain of Soul Episode 11

The interesting one is Mill Evans' version of Nolan Chance's "Just Like The Weather" which has been know about for years but has never, until now, been released. A 7" single sided white label test press (believed to be by the Exodus label) is listed on Popsike which sold for just short of $1500 in March 2009. Top UK rare soul DJ Butch has been playing it from around 2010 so I 'suspect' that he may have been the buyer or bought it from the buyer.

There is another version by Ritchie Parker/Aaron Neville on a Constellation 10" acetate. The song was written by Richard Parker so perhaps the name was used to cover up that it was by Aaron Neville. The backing track was used on Denise LaSalle's first single, "Love Reputation", released on Tarpon/Chess in 1967

Ruby Winters version of Linda Jones' "If Only (We Had Met Sooner)" was originally released on a 1999 UK only compilation "The Best Of Ruby Winters" and then pressed on vinyl by Creative Soul last year. The retouch is, so far, unreleased but given the retouch was done by Early & Jeffries it may eventually be released on Sonic Wax?

VA [2023] - Mountain Of Soul Episode 7 [Charly]

The latest instalment of Mountains of Soul Episode 7 was released last Friday (20 Jan '23). This time out half of the tracks are from New Orleans based labels/artists.

01 - Big Daddy Rogers [1968] - I'm a Big Man [Midas #9006]

Dated '68 but sound earlier as this is a driving R&B number by blues singer Big Daddy Rogers.

02 - The Rubaiyats [1968] - Omar Khayyam [Sansu #456]

The Rubaiyats were duo Willie Harper and Allen Toussaint and this seems to be their only recoding together as The Rubaiyats but thanks to a comment left we now know they recorded another on Sansu as Willie & Allen "I Don't Need No One" / "Baby Do Little".

03 - Syl Johnson [2010] - I've Been Talked About [Numero Group #NUM 322]

This song was released on a Numero Group Syl Johnson album compilation "Complete Mythology" in 2010 and featured on the album "Do You Know What Soul Is?" which was also sold separately (NUM 322.2) and appears to be a previously unreleased album.

04 - Inell Young [196?] - The Next Ball Game [Big 9 #1001]

The only release on New Orleans label Big 9 which isn't dated but must be late 60s. The song was written and arranged by Edwin J. Bocage aka Eddie Bo. Both sides have been reissued several times by Soul Jazz Records in UK.

05 - Gerri Hall [1966] - Who Can I Run To [Hot Line #905]

Another New Orleans outing from the same label that gave the scene Donna King "Take Me Home". Hall released a handful of singles before becoming one of Ray Charles' Raeletts.

06 - Holly Maxwell [1965] - (Happiness Will Cost You) One Thin Dime [Constellation #C-152]

Back to Chicago for Holly Maxwell's first single. She had another biggie "Only When You're Lonely" from her half a dozen singles.

07 - Lydia Marcelle [1967] - It's Not Like You [Manhattan #809]

Another New Orleans release this time from blue-eyed singer Lydia Marcell who was from L.A.

08 - Fuller Brothers [1969] - Time's A Wasting [Soul Clock #SC-105]

A NS classic by brothers Erskin and Major Fuller. They also released only around half a dozen singles for west coast labels between 1966-70. The same backing was used by The Whisper on Remember Me.

09 - The Shadows [1970] - My Love Is Gone [Golden Sound #2001]

The only listed single for the Chicago group originally released on Golden Sound and picked up be U.S.A. Records for national release in 1970.

10 - Chuck Ray [1967] - I Don't Mind [Tam-Boo #6719]

The final song is one featured on Richard Searling's Crossover 100 by Chuck Ray and , for me, the best of the bunch on this compilation. He released only five singles and at least another three of them have had exposure on the scene, "Reconsider", "I Go For Love" and "Pleased Don't Go", only the funky track "Double Dog" has been ignored.

Strangely, the Amazon listing only shows 9 tracks and states that it's not available for sale, so it may be streaming only.

(Former Ikette (with Gloria Scott) Patricia Ann Cole recorded this track in London on Rolling Stones manger, Andrew Loog Oldham's, label after leaving The Ikettes).

02 - Little Richie [1966] - Just Another Heartache [Sound Stage 7 #45-2554]

(The only recording as Little Richie for John 'Little Richie' Richard Jarvis who recorded two further singles in the early 70s as Little Richie Jarvis and then Richard Jarvis which both appear to be country songs, the first produced by Bobby Goldsboro. He died in June 1980. This has been a NS classic 'forever', strong suspicions that the singer may be white?)

03 - Carole Waller [1967] - This Love Of Mind [USA #863]

(A double sider by blue-eyed Waller which has a cover of Gladys Knight & The Pips "Stop And Get A Hold Of Yourself" on flip).

(Daughters of label owner Bobby Robinson and written and produced by Pat (Patrick) Adams)

(Chicago group formerly known as The Ascots, released just 3 singles)

(Superb, largely overlooked track from Chandler)

The latest instalment of Kev Roberts podcast and accompanying compilation "Mountain of Soul Episode 5" is  out today (23 Dec '22).

It consists of three or four pretty well known sounds Gladys Knight, Ohio Players, Razzy and The Winstons along with some semi (DeVons) and lesser knows.

A bonus track on podcast only.  One of very few Northern Soul Christmas records played (I'm scratching my head trying to think of any others). Artie Fullilove was a member of Johnnny Johson & The Bandwagon. He released another single on Marlu which was an uptown/uptempo (NS) version of  "Strangers In The Night" made famous by Frank Sinatra the same year, which isn't as bad as you would imagine!

VA [2022] - Mountain of Soul Episode 4 [Charly] (Full Album)

The next instalment of Mountain Of Soul with Episode 4 was released on Friday (9 Dec '22). Unlike Episode 3, which still hasn't appeared on Spotify, this one has but also included is the Kev Roberts hosted podcast from Mixcloud on which the series is based.

A few more Top 500 classics thrown in from Roscoe Shelton, Donna King, Nolan Chance, Fi-Dells and Anderson Brothers. A rarity from The De-Tours and a superb unreleased song by Otis Clay which first appeared on a look-a-like One-derful! label released by Secret Stash in 2017. New discoveries don't get much better that this these days! A new one on me from Jim & Lee which is quite nice. The set completes with A.C. Reed and a classy crossover track from Choice of Colour which got a reissue on Grapevine in 2000.

VA [2022] - Mountain Of Soul Episode 2 [Charly] (Full Album)

The first in the series of  "Mountain Of Soul Episode 1" was posted a couple of weeks back where we stated that the second episode was due on 11 Nov '22. Well here it is, and I think it's probably a better set. 

As with the first episode, it features several Northern Soul Top 500 tunes (as the series is a podcast hosted by Kev Roberts the author of the book). e.g. The Chandlers, The Fury's, Ruby Andrews (one of the best NS tunes ever IMO which I never tire of hearing which, from memory, I first recall hearing when Brian Rae dropped it in 1975 in the oldies room, so it must have been first played well before that but became big again in the 90s) and  Mikki Farrow. 

A surprise, but welcome, inclusion is "If We Don't" by 94 East fronted by Colonel Abrams of which a 16 year old Prince was a member on guitar. The song was an unreleased 1975 recording but has featured on a couple of 94 East compilations since e.g. "Symbolic Beginning" (Charly 1995) and "The Cookhouse Five" (Numero Group 2010).

Apparently all the tracks in the series are going to be issued on vinyl but I'm not sure whether as singles, or album, or both.

UPDATE: It has just been announced today (16 Nov) that the Charly Store is opening today.

VA [2022] - Mountain Of Soul Episode 1 [Charly] (Full Album)

Charly Records has just released a ten track compilation of Northern Soul tunes, many well known (i.e. Jimmy Robins, Sandy Wynns, Gene Chandler, The Inspirations, The Georgia Prophets all being NS Top 500 tunes and a version of "Last Minute Miracle" by Ruby Winters recorded by The Shirelles (1967) and by Linda Jones (album only 1967) whilst others relatively obscure and perhaps unreleased.

The compilation title is taken from the opening track by Harrold Burrage which I believe is a previously unreleased song until unearthed on one of the M-Pac Secret Stash compilations. Curiously it sounds the same as the song recorded by Tommy Payton on Staff (Gary, IN) which got aired at Top Of The World Stafford in the 80s, yet the writer's credits are to Ben Brown on that recording and not Maurice Rodgers, but that sort of thing was a regular occurrence.

The other previously unreleased track (until appearing on a self-titled album last year which was posted along with their full Discography) is The Swiss Movement "Trying To Win Your Love" which seems  a little out of place being the only 70s track on the compilation, but what a tune!

The compilation is completed with two relative cheapies (in NS terms at least) by Les Watson And The Panthers "Occasionally I Cry" [1966 Pompeii] and The Kelly Brothers "Love Time" [1965 Sims] which was bootlegged in the mid 70s on the infamous O.O.T.P. (Out Of The Past) label so it must have been in-demand at one time but I don't recall ever hearing it played out but would guess it was a Twisted Wheel type of sound so before my time.

It transpires that these compilations are generated from a new Mixcloud podcast series hosted by renown Northern Soul entrepreneur Kev Roberts who is the author of the Northern Soul Top 500 book, so it's no big surprise that half the compilation is from that! Episode 2 is scheduled for 11 Nov 2022.
