Mary Cross [2023] - Meet Me On The Moon [2iNspireU]

A song written by Gene McDaniels "Meet Me On The Moon", recorded by the late Phyliss Hyman on her 1991 album "Prime Of My Life", is the vehicle for Mary Cross's new single.

Ms Cross wowed us with her debut single, "In Love, There's A Risk", in Nov 2019 and "Promise" in Jan 2021. Last year she released a Latin number "Summer Samba" which she now follows with her latest single released last Friday (3 Feb '23).

Born and raised in Camden, New Jersey, Mary founded 2NspireU band a decade ago who perform to sold out shows throughout the tristate region and beyond (video clip of their performance included below). She cites her musical influences as Oleta Adams, Phyllis Hyman (which are clearly heard in her ballads) as well as Sarah Vaughan, Gregory Porter, Nancy Wilson, Nina Simone.

Mary Cross [2020/21] - Promise / In Love There's A Risk [Self Released]

A double helping of Mary Cross. I've already posted both these tracks but she has since released a new video for 'Promise'. It's a 'slow burner'. I wasn't sure about it when I first heard it as I was comparing it with her stunning debut 'In Love There's A Risk' and I still don't think it matches that standard, but it has grown on me and it's a bit unfair to compare as these are both standout tracks 'out of the blocks' as her first two releases.

It may be my ears(?) but I think the sound quality on this video is poor. Also, note that the first 1:40 is a clip from 'In Love There's A Risk' before 'Promise' starts.

Mary Cross [2021] - Promise [Mary Cross]

Another new release for 2021. Her previous single, 'In Love, There's A Risk', appeared in my Top 25 for 2020, so it's great to have some new material.  There is also another, more uptempo track, on her YT channel released in October which I previously missed, so I'll also post that.

On her debut single she was compared to soul diva Phyllis Hyman and she states that she was influenced by her. You can read more about her on her website.

Promise

Officially released on 1st Jan 2021 and another deep soul ballad.  Not sure whether I like it as much as 'In Love, There's A Risk' yet as it will need a few plays I think.
