Nova Vida feat. KLEI [2023] - My Only (Club Vocal) [BDQ Records]

Out digitally yesterday and available on 7" vinyl with an instrumental flip on 24 Jul is "My Only" by Nova Vida feat. KLEI.

It's a debut singe from a new Chris Bangs project Nova Vida released on his BDQ Records and an 11 track album "A Song For Everyone" is due in Spring 2024. 

The vocal version of the single features Brazilian singer KLEI with Argentinian guitarist FERMIN on the instrumental.  So no prizes for guessing that it's a Latin affair, a Brazilian samba.

A snippet of the song was featured on the 1997 movie "As Good As It Gets" sung by French singer Danielle Brisebois. It was only 1:47 and we can't find it anywhere apart from the soundtrack, but there is a 'full' 3:28 version on YouTube from 'somewhere' unless it's been spliced and extended from the soundtrack?

Chris Bangs [2022] - Samba do Sueno / Soccer Samba [Acid Jazz #AJX 662S]

Released digitally last week (13 Oct) and out on 7" vinyl on 7 Nov via Acid Jazz is a Latin jazz instrumental release from Chris Bangs "Samba do Sueno" / "Soccer Samba".

The A side is a cover of Cal Tjader "Samba Do Suenho" from "Along Comes Cal" (1967) and included on a 1989 eponymous album. Both tracks will be featured on his new album "Firebird" due in Jan 2023.

Phillip Levi [2022] - Come With Me [The Villa Records]

The title of Chloe Bodur's new single (just posted) "Come With Me" reminded me that I came across this cover version of Tania Maria (recently reissued on vinyl by Soul Brother) on Saturday (25 Jun 2022) by Phillip Levi which I'd forgotten about.

Certainly not one for the purists as it sounds very synthesised but I'll put it up out of intrigue/interest more than anything else.

Phillip Levi is 57 and comes from Berkley, CA, and this is his third single, he released his first two last year. From listening to the first two I would guess that he''s a saxophonist although there doesn't appear to be a sax present in this track it is prominent in his other two releases.

I had to chuckle when I read the writers credits as it's himself, Tommy George Campbell and Teena Marie (i.e. not Tania Maria!)

Tania Maria [2022] - Come With Me / Lost In Amozonia [Soul Brother #SB7043]

One of my favourite Latin Jazz tunes which was originally released in 1983 (and posted previously on the blog along with a 2018 version by Paprika Soul) from Brazilian singer/pianist/composer Tania Maria is getting a 7" vinyl reissue by Soul Brother. 

 Apart from being on the same titled album, it was only ever released on a Concord Picante 7" promo in 1983 and then got a 12" German release on Bellaphone in 1985. It was reissued on 12" in UK by Glimmer in 2002.

"Come With Me" is paired with the original B side of the Concord Picante promo 7" "Lost In Amozonia" and is available to pre-order via Simply Soul for release on 24 Jun 2022. Oddly it's not currently listed on Soul Brother's website.

A​-​Sirr Feat. Paola Barba [2021] - Come With Me [Self Released]

Synchronicity at work again as exactly a year ago on 29 Nov 2020 I posted this classic Latin jazz track "Come With Me" by Tania Maria along with a 2018 cover by Paprika Soul. Gary Van Den Bussche played Tania Maria's 1983 original on his show today.  Lo and behold whilst digging around this evening I've come across another version by A-Sirr featuring Paola Barba which I saw on one of those Bandcamp only Yacht Disco Edits compilations from Feb 2021 but discovered it was released as a single in  Sep 2020.

Tania Maria [1985] - Come With Me [Bellaphone #120 07.158]

I remember buying this wonderful latin jazz track by Tania Maria when it came out. I can't put my hand on my copy at the moment, but their only appears to be 2 releases, a Brazilian promo 7" from 1983 (which I doubt mine is) and a German 12" from 1985 - which doesn't ring a bell, so I'll need to hunt it down.  It was big on the Jazz Funk circuit back in the day and one that you seldom here.  It seems to be getting hard to find as only 5 currently for sale on Discogs for around the £50 mark.  I was reminded of it from doing the Paprika Soul post as they have covered in on their Club Mixes CD.

If you've never heard this then hopefully it will blow you away.  Superb latin jazz.
