Lance Ferguson [2022] - Rare Groove Spectrum, Vol. 2 [Freestyle Records] (Full Album)

A couple of tracks from this album, released today (28 Jan 2022), have already been posted i.e. "Far Beyond" and "Summer Madness".

Lance Ferguson is a guitarist, songwriter, producer and DJ originally from New Zealand now based in Melbourne and is the leader of The Bamboos.

The second volume of Rare Groove Spectrum is predominantly instrumental covers and apart from the two tracks above, the standout is "Estrela" which is a cover of a 1983 Latin jazz funk tune by Marcos Valle from Brazil which also has Leon Ware  on writers credits. There is an instrumental version of Carly Simon's "Why" written by Nile & Rogers (Chic).

Lance Ferguson v Skyline v Kool & The Gang - Summer Madness / Sadness

A nice lazy Sunday vibe! That London bus syndrome arises again as Lance Ferguson released another track from his forthcoming "Rare Grooves Spectrum Vol. 2" yesterday (21 Jan 2022)  (album is due next Friday 28 Jan) and as if by magic a group called Skyline also released a version of the same track on the same day, which of course is Kool & the Gang's classic "Summer Madness".

The song has been sampled literally hundred of times by the likes of Snoop Dogg "Doggy Dogg World" (1993), Ice Cube "You Know How We Do It" (1993), Aaliyah "A Girl Like Me" (1996) and, probably most famously, by DJ Jazzy Fresh & Fresh Prince "Summertime" (1991).

I've included some great vintage footage of Kool & the Gang performing the song 'live' on Soul Train back in the day, 'probably' 1975, as it was originally released as a B side to "Spirit Of The Boogie" which was their third #1 US R&B hit and Summer Madness reached #36 so it must have been flipped.

Lance Ferguson [2021] - Far Beyond [Freestyle]

You may, or may not, be familiar with Lance Ferguson. He is the leader of Aussie band The Bamboos and wrote the popular tune "This Girl" for Cookin' On 3 Burners.

He's a guitarist, songwriter, producer and DJ originally from New Zealand now based in Melbourne. In 2019 he produced an album "Rare Groove Spectrum" which, as the title implies, is a collection of re-imaginings of rare groove and classic soul tracks.

The second volume ("Rare Groove Spectrum, Vol. 2") drops on 28 Jan 2022 but as a taster he's pre-released (12 Nov) a cover of The Sunburst Band's (Dave Lee aka Joey Negoro) "Far Beyond" which was released in 2004.  In turn Dave Lee sampled a 1974 album track by Ahmad Jamal "Swahililand" from "Jamal Plays Jamal".
