Gloria Scott, who released her first album in almost 50 years last September, will be touring the UK this year.

16 Mar - Cambridge Junction, Cambridge
17 Mar - 229, London
18 Mar - The Crossing Digbeth, Birmingham

Tickets available HERE

Scott got her start after being discovered by Sly Stewart (Sly & The Family Stone) in the early 60s whilst still at High School in San Francisco. She was born in Port Arthur, TX, on 27 Feb 1948 and raised in Houston before moving to San Francisco in her early teens

Stewart wrote and produced her first recording in 1964 aged 18 as Gloria Scott & The Tonettes "I Taught Him Pts 1 & 2" released on Warner Bros. which sunk without trace. She then auditioned for The Ikettes but left soon afterwards as she didn't respect Ike Turner's strict discipline and fining regime.

In the early 70s she met Barry White whilst performing as a backing singer who signed her on a 7 year contract and got her a deal with Casablanca and produced her debut album "What Am I Gonna Do". Unfortunately for Scott, at around the same time White's star was rising and he was having hit after hit and Casablanca, being a start-up label at the time, failed to promote the album and White wasn't around to help as his career rise was stratospheric, and that was just about that for Gloria after the album didn't sell well.

She did record another album with H.B. Barnum which never got released and then became a backing singer for Mary Wilson (The Supremes) on her self-titled debut album in 1979.

Fast forward to the 90s and she was living and singing in Guam (in the south Pacific) (where she lived for 8 years) when a tourist approached her saying that he knew her name and relayed the fact that her album, and one song from it in particular (which had only been released as single in Australia) was very popular on the UK/European rare soul scene. That song of course being "(A Case Of) Too Much Love Makin'" which was covered by Lisa Stansfield on her 1993 album "So Natural".

Then in the mid 2000s she was approached by Andrew McGuiness who promotes the Baltic Soul Weekenders in Germany to perform at the weekender, which she has done every year since 2008.

McGuiness learnt that she had some unreleased recordings in the can and encouraged her to release them (along with new material) on a new album which she did last year and "So Wonderful" was released on 30 Sep by Acid Jazz.

Below are three very short clips of an interview with Gloria from her YouTube channel posted in Nov '22.

Gloria Scott [2022] - All Of The Time, You're On My Mind [Acid Jazz]

Gloria Scott released her first album in almost 50 years on 30 Sep 2022 with "So Wonderful" (her first "What Am I Gonna Do" , produced by Barry White, was released in 1974).

Her career was resurrected from appearances in Germany from The Baltic Soul Weekender, where she has appeared every year since 2008. The promoter, Andrew McGuiness, learned of several unreleased tracks and persuaded Gloria to re-record them along with some new material for the new album.

One of those previously unreleased songs, "All Of The Time, You're On My Mind", written by Thomas Anderson and Vance Wilson, (a member of The Remarkables and brother of Frank Wilson) has been released as her next single today (9 Dec '22) along with a "Dicky Continental Rework".

To learn more about 76 year old Gloria's extraordinary path then follow link to "So Wonderful". There's also a good article in The Guardian for the album release.

Gloria Scott - There's No Cure For Me v Frankie Vance - Can't Break The Habit (Of Your Love)

The recent album release "So Wonderful" by Gloria Scott contained a few tracks recorded back in the 70s when she was signed to Casablanca and was produced by Barry White. One of those songs "There's No Cure For Me" is a cover of a 1969 single on Revue by Frankie Vance "Can't Break The Habit (Of Your Love)".

It is claimed that Frankie Vance is an alias for Frank Wilson (not 'that' Frank Wilson) but wonder if it could be a duo of Frank and his brother Vance, who jointly wrote the song? Only one other single is listed for the artist name, the same year and label and also co-written by the brothers. They also sang together with another brother Henry and David Lee Cason as The Remarkables who released three singles on Audio Arts in 1965-66 with the third coming later in 1974.

Gloria Scott [2022] - So Wonderful [Acid Jazz] (Full Album)

Having pre-released the title track "So Wonderful" on 2 Sep and another two tracks "All Of The Time, You're On My Mind" (20 Jul) and a cover of Joe Smooth's Gospel-house classic "Promised Land" (3 Jun Bandcamp only)  , Gloria Scott released her first album for 48 years today (30 Sep 2022).

Gloria Scott's music has been admired for decades on the rare soul scene. She released just one album "What Am I Gonna Do" in 1974 produced by Barry White. It spawned a couple of singles ("What Am I Gonna Do" and "Just As Long As We're Together (In My Life There Will Never Be Another)") followed by a third and the most sought after, issued only in Australia on 7", "(A Case Of) Too Much Lovemakin'" which was covered by Lisa Stansfield many years later in 1993 on "So Natural" and Paprika Soul had a stab at it in 2018. I think from recollection it was also recorded around 2000 by Kim Weston but I think it was a white label 'bootleg' taken from a compilation CD that Ian Levine was behind. All above versions were posted in Nov 2020.

The album contains three tracks from the period she was working with Barry White that were never released, including "All Of The Time, You're On My Mind".

After a first listen I would guess that "There's No Cure For Me" and "I've Got To Have All Of You" are the others as they are written by White, Gene Page and H.B. Barnum. In terms of the highlights from the tracks not already released (and the two above), I think they are "Real", "Running Away" and "Show Me" on which P.P. Arnold is a co-writer.

She recorded her first single in 1964 as Gloria Scott & The Tonettes "I Taught Him" on Warner Bros. which is a rockin' R&B tune written and produced by Sly Stewart (Sly & The Family Stone).  It failed to chart and later she became an one of The Ikettes, before meeting Barry White who signed her on a 7 year contract, but owing to his own career taking off, and being signed to a start up label, which Casablanca was at the time, Scott was neglected.

Her 1974 album has been reissued multiple times on both vinyl and CD such is it's popularity.

She recorded a second album with H. B. Barnum but it was not released and she later became a background singer for Mary Wilson (Supremes).

In more recent times Gloria has become a regular performer at The Baltic Soul Weekender in Germany each summer.

Both her 1974 singles entered R&B chart with the first reaching #74 and second "Just As Long As We're Together (In My Life There Will Never Be Another)" getting to #14 which garnered it an appearance on Soul Train but only with dancers featured not a live appearance. In typical Barry White fashion, both flip sides were instrumentals of the A sides.

Gloria Scott [2022] - So Wonderful [Acid Jazz]

A single "All Of The Time, You're On My Mind" was pre-released on 20 Jul from a forthcoming album by Gloria Scott, "So Wonderful" due on 30 Sep 2022. before that she covered J Smooth's "Promised Land" which is also to be featured on the album.

Today the title track "So Wonderful" has also been drip fed. I have a feeling that it's a reworking of a 2013 track "It's So Wonderful" (included below).

For more information about Gloria Scott please follow link above for the first track released.
