Jody Watley [2024] - Everlasting (Alex Di Ciò Mixes) [Avitone Recordings]

Yesterday Jody Watley celebrated her (whisper it) 65th birthday and released a new single "Everlasting" co-written and co-produced with Rodney Lee and mixed by Italian DJ, producer, remixer Alex Di Ciò.

Born in Chicago in 1959, she is the God daughter of the great Jackie Wilson. Jody made her breakthrough dancing on the legendary TV show Soul Train at the tender age of 14. The show's creators Dick Griffey and host Don Cornelius drafted Jody and fellow Soul Train dancer Jeffrey Daniel to join Gary Mumford to create Shalamar.  Mumford was replaced by Gerald Brown for the group's second album, who in turn was replaced by Howard Hewett in 1979 and that classic trio went on  to have a string of UK Pop chart hits such as "Second Time Around", Right In The Socket", I Owe You One", "Make That Move", I Can Make You Feel Good", A Night To Remember", "There It Is", "Friends".

Watley and Daniel left the group before the release of the group's seventh album, "The Look", in 1983 and Watley moved to England for a couple of years (appearing on Band Aid single in 1985) before returning to the states. She released her eponymous solo debut album in 1987 with the lead single "Looking For A New Love" becoming her first solo hit. The album topped the R&B chart and reached #10 on Hot 100.

Jody won a Grammy for Best New Artist in 1988 and was also nominated for Best R&B Vocal Performance, Female the same year for  "Looking For A New Love". She has released around ten studio albums with the latest being "Paradise" in 2014.

In 2008 she received Billboard's Lifetime Achievement Award and last year began hosting her own monthly radio show on Sirius XM Satellite Radio.

Mavis SWAN Poole [2024] - Every Man Aint the Same [Self Released]

Mavis SWAN Poole is a classically trained music teacher and vocal coach from Durham, NC, who has performed with many big name artists including Gladys Knight, Mavis Staples, Lauryn Hill and Shirley Caesar to name but a few.  She was a member of Soul Understated who released a couple of albums "On the Shoulders of Giants (Side A)" (2014) and "Songs In The Key Of Grease" (2017) but she also released a solo album "Soul Tree (Sultry)" in 2009.

We have featured her last two singles "How Do We Grow" (May '23) and "The Assignment" (Oct '22) which was our SoulStrutter Selection of the Week that week. Her latest single is "Every Man Aint the Same" released on 22 Jan.

At the time of posting "The Assignment" she was working on a new EP "Adult Time: Vol. 1", which has yet to materialise, but if these three singles are an example of what to expect then it will be essential listening.

Al Holbrook [2024] - Ticket to Mars [Spiral suggestions]

Ohio-born and raised keyboardist, singer and songwriter Al Holbrook grew up influenced by funk, blues, jazz and hip hop genres. Now L.A. based, with his band The Al Holbrook Band, he has held residencies and played in clubs and at festivals all over the world.

Not strictly a soul band, they play funk, blues, folk and urban vibes but his latest single "Ticket To Mars" has a nice funky vibe with a jazzy edge. It's his second single already of 2024, his last, "Village Liar", is in the same vein but with a harder funky edge.

SoulStrutter Selection of Retro Soul Jan 2024

There's very little so far this week  on the new music front so, as we've already posted a couple of retro releases, we bring you our top 25 retro, covers and reissues released in January. The covers/remakes/reissues are obvious but the the retro ones are arbitrary and subjective, but all sound old school to our ears from various decades.

Covers: by Jacob G. (John Gary Williams), Napoleon Demps (Little Beaver), Lebrado (Enchantment also a reissue from 2009), Ashton Grey Project (Rufus & Chaka Khan), Igor Gerzina & Anya Alu (Toto and others)., Methrone (Marvin Gaye), Paul Simpson Uniquity (Ethel Beatty)

Cover/Sample: Maurice Mahon (Bobby Womack) Mike E. (sure this uses elements of Simply Red's Holding Back The Years), occochill (we think this samples an 80s song that we can't identify .. anyone?)

Reissues: Harvey Scales, Lebrado,

McKenzie & Gardiner is unreleased from 30 years ago and we believe that Gigi Copeland & Lou Ragland must be an unreleased song from the 80s. The remainder all have an old school feel.

The Tibbs [2024] - Keep It To Yourself [Record Kicks #RKC094] (Full Album)

Amsterdam based, eight-piece band, The Tibbs released their fourth album, "Keep It To Yourself", on Friday via Record Kicks. It has been produced by Paul Willemsen (Michelle David & The Tru-tones) and mastered in Nashville by soul veteran Bob Olhsson, who worked at Motown back in the day.

Among the 12 retro 60s soul tracks is the lead single "Ain’t It Funny", and the second single, "Give Me A Reason", both high-energy stompers that set the tone for the entire set. It includes the New Orleans funk inspired "Can’t Teach an Old Dog New Tricks" and instrumental "Chicken Bones" along with a few mid-tempo (crossover style) numbers such as "For Lack Of Better Words" and "Rafaella" and closes with a southern soul style ballad "In Orbit" on which lead singer Roxanne Hartog takes centre stage and is probably our choice cut along with "Rafaella" on first listen.

The Tibbs formed in 2012 and released their debut album "Cleaned Out" in 2014 and their first for Milan label Record Kicks, "Takin' Over" in 2016 (an instrumental version of the album was also released in 2020). Lead singer until then was Elsa Bekman who decided in 2018 to focus on a solo career and was replaced by Roxanne Hartog from their third album "Another Shot Fired" (2020) to date.
