NS578 Jean Carter [1966] - Like One [Decca 31865]

578 Jean Carter [1966] - Like One [Decca 31865]
b/w That Boy Ain't No Good
Format:  45
Label:     Decca
CatNo:   31865
Year:      1966
Value:    £255 Demo Only

Nothing much known about Jean Carter.  This massive stomper circa early 70s Torch era was a monster all-nighter tune that doesn't get a lot of plays these days probably because it's too well known? Archetypal Northern Soul - 2 minutes of pure energy.  It was reissued on Decca owing to demand but an original will set you back quite a few notes.
Some 'googling' uncovered Jean Carter & The Centerpieces - No Good Jim c/w And None on Stateside SS 2114 released in May 1968 and reissued on Stateside SS2204 in May 1972. It was also released on Star 18393 as a demo. Is this the same Jean Carter?

There a great track that has been played in recent years (since at least 2005) covered-up as Jean Carter - I Wanna Know which is a one-off Decca acetate played by the top rare-soul DJ Mark 'Butch' Dobson.  I don't know if it has ever been 'uncovered' I somehow doubt it as the rtist is probably unknown.

Here's a very poor quality  'rip' of it on YouTube.

Another double-sider which has had spins is I Bet You c/w Love Hangover (NOT the Diana Ross song) .. and what a pedigree on these 2 sides Top side written by George Clinton, Sidney Barnes & Theresa Lindsay and flip side by George Kerr & Sidney Barnes.
Sunflower was Sidney Barnes' label and apparently Jean Carter was his girlfriend when this was recorded in 1967.

Jean Carter [1967] - I Bet You [Sunflower #S-102-A]

Jean Carter [1967] - Love Hangover [Sunflower #S-102-B]

Covered up when it was first played as Gwen Owens & The Vel-Girls.

No Good Jim by Jean Carter and The Centerpieces is one of the most underrated records ever made. When I first heard this record I rushed out to buy it because the vocals and arrangement were far ahead of their time. This is one of the very best examples of Northern Soul ever produced. One of the most exciting records ever. Thanks and cheers, Laurice.
