Soul veteran Alexander O'Neal will be 70 in November and is currently undertaking
his farewell tour and has just released "Love Finds A Way" which is possibly his best recording since the 80s/90s. In May he
released a four track EP "Is This Seat Taken".
It is the lead single from an album "Testament" due in 2024 and was co-written with Alexander and JV Johnson of Mammas Freedom and features the band..
His farewell, "Time To Say Goodbye", tour commenced on 8 Sep at Sheffield
City Hall and continues into next year culminating in a performance at
Royal Albert Hall, London, on 7 Jun. '24.
O'Neal was born in Mississippi in 1953 moving north aged 20. He eventually ended up in Minneapolis and, after singing
with groups such as The Mystics, Wind Chymes and Enterprise, teamed up with
Jimmy Jam Harris and Terry Lewis in Flyte Time. They met with Prince and
Morris Day with a view to forming The Time but, according to Harris, O'Neal
fell out with Prince who replaced him in The Time with Day.
He then formed a group called Alexander and released a couple of
12" singles on indie labels in 1982-83 before being signed to Clarence Avant's
newly founded Tabu records in 1984 initially performing backing vocals. The rest is history, as his debut,
self-titled, album launched his solo career with the classic "If You
Were Here Tonight" along with "A Broken Heart Can Mend", and "What's
Missing". Incredulously none of them charted on Billboard's Hot 100 but
did well on the R&B charts and "If You Were Here Tonight" peaked at #13 on UK pop chart.
Since the early 2000s O'Neal has lived in the UK.
