Goapele Mohlabane (pronounced gwa-puh-LAY) meaning 'to move forward' in South African dialect Sitswana is from Oakland, CA, of South African/German-Jewish descent. She attended Berklee College of Music and self-released her first album in 2001.
Her next, and further three albums, were released on her own label Skyblaze Recordings set up with her brother Namabe. Columbia Records picked up on her third album, "Change It All" (2005) and reissued an expanded edition of her second "Even Closer" (2002).
It seems to have been five years since she last released any material with the album "Dreamseeker", and two singles from it, in May 2017.
She makes a return on her 45th birthday (11 Jul) with a single "Time Heals" which features a host of artists: Errol Cooney, Michael Aaberg, Derrick Hodge, Chris Dave
& Keyon Harrold. The single, as you would expect with so many guest artists, is exquisitely produced and exudes class.
We are told that the single is from her forthcoming 6th album "COLORS" which is due later this summer and was written and recorded during the Covid-19 pandemic.
