It would seem to us that jazz-funk is making a bit of a comeback with
recent single by Chris Kingdon, "Lonnie's Dream", last week and Zaimie's debut album "Fortuitous" and now here's another in a similar vein from Grammy nominated guitarist
Cory Wong.
It's "The Grid Generation", the third single from his upcoming, fourth, studio album "The
Lucky One" due on 18 Aug.
The new single has strong horn lines, energetic guitar riffs and killer
basslines and features LA-based electro jazz-funk multi-instrumentalist and
singer-songwriter Louis Cole. It's quite dramatic and TV/movie theme'ish and rock like in places and with it's driving beat is something that some of the 'talcumed ones' (Northern Soulies that is) may have appreciated back in the day when these type of instrumentals were all the rage.
Wong says "it's my best improvised guitar solo to date. Some of the other solos were
more crafted, and we used an arranging tool that we learned from Prince
where you overdub orchestral arrangements that double/harmonize/enhance
the guitar solo to make it feel even more epic.”
As part of his world tour, Wong will perform his biggest UK headline show to
date at 5000-capacity Eventim Apollo (Hammersmith Odeon to you and me) in
London on 11 Oct. followed by other UK dates:
12 Oct - Birmingham, Birmingham 02 Institute
13 Oct - Manchester, O2 Apollo
14 Oct - Glasgow, Barrowland Ballroom
A list of full tour dates is on his
website.
