The Deep Vault is something new we decided to launch to highlight the
deeper side of soul music which is at the root of 'our' music. It wont be a
regular feature but something we drop in occasionally when it's all quiet on
    the new release front.
It may be opportune for some who expound the virtues of R&B, dance
music, neo/future/progressive soul to reacquaint themselves with what soul
music is really about, i.e. real musicians with real voices singing with
'soul' as, lets face it, any of us could parade around with our voices
autotuned over beats, what's 'real' about that? Enough of the
samples, drum machines and auto-tuned vocals, let's get real!
Most, if not all, of these in our first instalment will be known to soul
connoisseurs but hopefully may be 'new' to others who may gain a new
appreciation of the raw artistry of the backbone to soul music.
As a logo for the series we've borrowed Dave Godin's 60s Soul City label
image with the motto: 'Soul as deep as you like and then some'. Dave was a
big exponent of the genre in his Blues & Soul columns and is probably
responsible for single-handedly turning many of us onto the genre but, as with
most 'labels', it is one that is not tightly defined, it is something you
have to feel. It's not just ballads, slow jams or quiet storm it goes much
'deeper' than that. Gut wrenching rawness that you know that the singer
means every word that is being sung. Someone once said that you can't sing
soul if you've never been hurt!
Sit back, pour a drink and an wallow in the mastery. Every one, in our
opinion, is an absolute gem. If these songs don't move you then you ain't
got (or you just don't get) soul. Gin and razor blades are optional!
