Phony Ppl is five-man band from Brooklyn, NYC. Each member is a product
of musical parents. Co-founded by Elbee Thrie (Robert Booker) (vocals)
and Aja Grant (keyboards) adding Bari Bass (Omar Jabari Grant) (bass),
Elijah Rawk (Elijah Austin) (guitar) and Matthew Byas (drums).
They have recorded several independent albums since their creation in 2008 (e.g. "WTF Is Phonyland?" and self-released several digital downloads,
including "Phonyland" (2012), "Nothing Special" (2012) and "53,000" (2013) the last three are still available on BandCamp) but it it was
"Yesterday’s Tomorrow", released in 2015, that introduced the
world to their genre-less flavors. They followed it with "mō'zā-ik" in
2018.
Their latest single is "Nowhere But Up" which borrows from Cherrelle's Jam & Harris penned, and very Prince like, "I Didn't Mean To Turn You On" taken from her debut album "Fragile". It was her first hit reaching #8 R&B and crossing over onto the Hot 100 at#79. She later had her biggest Hot 100 success reaching #26 with Alexander O'Neal on "Saturday Love".
Not only did Cherrelle record it but Robert Palmer covered it in 1986 and had a UK Top 10 hit with it, one of only five Top 10 hits he had. You may be wondering what on earth is going on as this is the second time in a week that Mariah Carey has featured on these pages as she also also covered it on her "Glitter" album in 2001.
