Spanky Wilson [2022] - Doin’ It [Now-Again Records] (Full Album)

A classic album is reissued today by Now-Again Records. It's Spanky Wilson's sophomore album on Mothers Records & The Snarf Company "Doin' It" from 1969 which commands quite a high price on original vinyl. (Note it may be a digital reissue from previously but has come up on Amazon today).

It includes a long time favourite, "Loveland", which confusingly she recorded on the follow up album "Let It Be" which is a different song credited to Charles Wright and Don Trotter that drummer James Gadson claims to have written and later recorded his own version with a different title and lyrics  "Got To Find My Baby" in 1972 in 'protest'. The song on this album was written by Ed Townsend who co-wrote "Let's Get It On" with Marvin Gaye and was also released as a single but spelt as "Love Land" to confuse matters even further.

Another highlight is "That Love That A Woman Should Give To A Man" first recorded by Patti Drew in 1969 (which has a very similar feel to Nancy Wilson's "Face It Girl It's Over"), but I think I prefer Spanky's version.

The album includes a few well known covers including The Marvelettes', Smokey penned, 1965 hit "Don't Mess With Bill", Cream's "Sunshine Of Your Love" and The Doors' "Light My Fire". One the Northern Soulies will appreciate "Then I'll Be Happy".

I don't know if it's the mastering or just the copy uploaded to Spotify, but the sound levels seem to be very low.

If you're a vinyl hound, I noticed that P-Vine have a vinyl reissue, which has been remastered, due on 16 Nov 2022.
