As regular readers of Keith's posts will know I like to select a track to expand on to make the post a little more interesting than just saying here's his latest podcast! This week's subject is Earth, Wind & Fire's version of "Where Have All The Flowers Gone" which I always thought was an unlikely Northern Soul 'classic' via an upbeat version by Walter Jackson (Okeh 1966) as it was originally a folk song written by Pete Seeger who recorded it first as part of a medley in 1960. It was The Kingston Trio who first recorded it as a complete song in 1961 and then Peter, Paul & Mary followed in 1962 with, what is probably regarded as, the definitive version, but obviously of no real interest to soul listeners!
A new one to me is the one he's chosen for the show image by Theryl (de'Clouet) "Open Up Your Heart" from 1988 on 7" and then 1989 on 12" although they are the same length (according to the labels at least). I'd never heard of the artist who recorded only one other single "Separate Rooms" a year earlier on the same label, Pyramid, which Discogs states is a label created for him and these were the only two releases on the label. It's not bad either.
I was surprised to find a Wikipedia entry from him. With a name like his I thought perhaps he may have been French Canadian but no he was from New Orleans and known as 'House Man'. Prior to his solo singles he was a member of Hollygrove who released just one album "New Orleans Best Kept Secret" in 1982. He later became a member of a New Orleans band called Galactic formed in 1994 and performed on their first five albums, leaving in 2004 apparently due to health reasons and the heavy tour schedule.
According to wiki he released a further two solo singles in 2001 and 2007. There's a tenuous link to Earth Wind & Fire as he sang a cover of their "Mighty Mighty" on Charlie Hunter's "Songs From The Analog Playground" album (Blue Note 2001). He died in 2018 just short of his 67th birthday.
