The Soul Emperor takes a trip across the soulful decades one more time with a smattering of new releases including two tracks from JKABEL's new album "Rhythm & Bible" released on Wednesday.
A completely new name to me is Billy & The Bloodknots who released just one single on Josie in 1968. Sweet soul harmony of the highest order, and presumably one cherished by the Lowrider community and is still relatively cheap in the scheme of things. It's a Dakar production by Lincoln Fitzpatrick who was married to Helena Ferguson known to lovers of deep soul who had one side, "My Terms", played on the Northern Soul scene which has the Ohio Players uncredited on backing.
She only recorded three or four singles on Compass and Congress, although 45Cat has one listed to Helen Ferguson on 20th Century Fox from 1964 as her first recording, which does sound like it could be a younger her as it was recorded a few years earlier than her other recordings. The flip side "Forgetfulness" has Northern Soul appeal. She also did "I'd Rather Go Blind" which isn't the Etta James 'standard' but a pounding dancer which is starting to get noticed.
Another listed on Discogs but not 45Cat is "Come On And Dance Now" on Mighty Two which has the same backing as Shirley Ellis' "Soul Time". It's origin is a bit of a mystery and some believe that it may be a later Northern soul tailor-made?
