Barely two weeks ago, on 20 Jul, I posted another single from this
combination i.e. The Legendary Blue Notes featuring
Sugar Bear and Jean Carne. which was a cover of a Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes song "You Know How To Make Me Feel So Good" on Butch Ingram's Society Hill records.
They have another single due for release on Friday (6 Aug 2021). It's
their version of the Ashford & Simpson classic, and title track to
their 1978 album, "Is It Still Good To Ya" which was the follow-up
single to "It Seems To Hang On". It was obviously far too good to trouble
the Hot 100 but did reach #12 R&B. It was also recorded by the late
Teddy P. on Philly Int. as a single in 1980 which surprisingly didn't even
enter the R&B charts!
Jean Carne
is now 74 who recorded some fantastic songs on Philly Int. in the 70s/80s. It
is criminal to realise that she only had one solitary Hot 100 hit which was
as a featured vocalist with Norman Connors in 1975 on a duet with Michael
Henderson with "Valentine Love", and even that only just squeezed in
to Hot 100 at #97!
Sugar Bear
is Arthur Aikens who is a member of the Original Blue Notes.
I came across some rare footage of the promo video Ashford & Simpson recorded for the song, so have posted below. It must be one of the greatest soul ballads of all time, I loved it then and still love it now. I also found a live performance of the song by Teddy P.. but have no idea where or when, as it doesn't say, but looks like a TV show performance.
