A pleasant jazz infused debut album from Kim Riley Cage. She was born and raised near Chicago and was God daughter to Nat King Cole's brother Ike. She moved to Minneapolis and was discovered by Jesse Johnson of The Time and became a backing singer for the group in the 80s. Johnson formed 3 Shades Of Brown, a female trio consisting of Kim Cage, Christi Thornton and Leah Johnson (not sure if she was related to Jesse), who released an album in 1992 on Interscope 'Stronger Than Strong' which scraped into the R&B top 100 album chart at #98. Their material was mainly new jack swing. Kim sang lead on the title track. Only one single was released from the album 'Nasty Bass', and it would appear that no further recordings were released by the group.
Her debut solo album was released on 3rd Dec 2020. Standout track for me is 'Through My Eyes'.
Whilst the album contains 10 tracks 2 are preludes/interludes and the last track runs for just 1:13 mins, and 3 of the tracks have previously been released on singles, so only 4 new songs really on the album.
'Feel The Way' Feat. Eric Roberson was previously issued as a single in Sep 2019 and featured in Soul Tracks Top 100 of 2020. I hadn't seen this until today and interestingly only 6 or 7 of the top 25 tracks I listed yesterday feature in their chart, but it is more neo soul / R&B influenced, but I will have to check out some of their entries to see if there's anything I've missed!
'Perfect Paradise' c/w 'Summertime Love' was also released as a single way back in 2016, both tracks feature jazz guitarist Norman Brown.
