Jeremy Turgeon [2023] - Turned It Around [Music In Motion Records]

A song that was released in Nov '23, "Turned It Around" by Jeremy Turgeon seems to have been overlooked and is now getting a well deserved pushed again. It's framework is built around the Al Johnson feat. Jean Carn,1980 modern soul classic "Back For More", being sampled from the intro. How did we all miss this as it's a prime candidate for dancefloors with it's steppers vibe?

The name Jeremy Turgeon (aka Brass Man Reptiles) may be familiar to vinyl record buyers as Izipho Soul released a 7" by him in 2020 which included the gospel/jazz song "Blessed" featuring Cleveland P. Jones taken from a 2017 album "What Matters Most". The B side was Jones on "Mistakes". Note that copies are still available via Bandcamp.

He was billed as The Jeremy Turgeon Quintet on that release and we featured his debut solo single "Just Feels Right" in Aug '22 which featured Nichelle J. Mungo & Gabe Childs.

Jeremy Turgeon is a trumpeter/vocalist born in Springfield, MA, now living in North Carolina. He leads the horn section for gospel/jazz artist Doobie Powell.

He also works closely with Sanpriest playing and arranging horns on his three singles to date who we understand has his fourth single "Cravin'" due for release on Friday.

Erica Falls & Vintage Soul [2024] - Up / Makings Of Love [Izipho Soul #ZP105]

Most certainly one of the highlights of 2023 was the excellent single, "Up", from Erica Falls which  which we championed from release last July and is included on her recent album "Emotions".

Not one to miss an opportunity, Izipho Soul's Pat Biggerstaff has done a deal to release it on a 45 along with "Makings Of Love" from her 2017 "HomeGrown" album.

Two absolutely superb sides on one 45, what's not to like? Snap this up before it's gone if you need it on vinyl as these will definitely sell out quickly.

Available to pre-order now from Izipho Soul for release on 10 May.

NOTE The video below for "Makings of Love" is an alternate acoustic version and not the recorded version.

Lynn Davis [2024] - Beautiful You / Can I Come Over [Izipho Soul #ZP102]

Undeniably one of the top songs of 2023, "Beautiful You", by a 'relatively' unsung artist who has more than paid her dues as one of the most go-to session singers in the soul/jazz world, Lynn Davis, is being released on vinyl by Izipho Soul.

It is being paired with her debut solo single "Can I Come Over" from Oct '22. Quite unbelievably, it was Davis' first solo recording after over 40 years as a session singer with artists such as George Duke, Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, Chaka Khan, Teddy Pendergrass, Patrice Rushen and Anita Baker to name just a very few, her full discography can be seen HERE.

You can read more about Lynn via the links above to her singles when originally released.

In July '23 Ms Davis published a book 'Above Circumstance - My Story And Testimony' in which she gives a candid testimonial of her journey in the music business and personal transformation. It's a full of insight that will help others navigate this road, professionally, personally, and spiritually. It's available on Amazon (ISBN13: 979-8889927327).

The single is available now to pre-order from Izipho Soul for release on 12 Apr '24.

R.I.P. - Freddie Chavez (15 May 1948 - 2 Mar 2014)

Northern Soul DJ/promoter/author etc. Kev Roberts has posted on Soul Source that Freddie Chavez passed away on Saturday evening (2 Mar) aged 75.

His 1968 single has been well played on the Northern Soul scene over the years, initially for the B side "They'll Never Know Why" but also in more recent years the official funky crossover A side, "Baby I'm Sorry", which has found favour. Only two years ago we reported an auction for the single which had a bid of almost £3.5k. We didn't check the final bid. As we post this John Manship has another demo copy up for auction closing on 13 Mar with a current bid of £1k

Chavez recorded the single aged 21 for John Wagner's Nashville based Look Records. "They'll Never Know Why" was massive in the mid 70s and was bootlegged owing to popularity.

Prior to the release of his first solo single, he is credited as being a member of Thee Chekkers who also released a single ("Please Don't Go" / "Lack Of Love") on Look in 1968, he wrote both songs. The group released an earlier single (possibly around 1964/65) on Albuquerque's Red Feather label.

Chavez was born and raised in Albuquerque, New Mexico and began his career aged only 11 in 1959. He played with a band all through high school and beyond singing anything from Spanish songs to psych rock. Two further singles are credited to him on FCP (his own imprint  Freddie Chavez Productions) but no dates are available.

He was inducted into the New Mexico Hall of Fame in 2005 and continued performing until his health declined. In 2017 he released a CD, "Time & Time Again", with re-recorded versions of a couple of his Look songs. You can listen to the whole CD on his Soundcloud channel.

In 2018 Izipho Soul uncovered two previously unreleased songs Chavez recorded in 1979, "Cold Rainy Day" / "You've Been Wrong So Long", which they released on 7". The flip is more of a country/soul song similar to Dobie Gray's "Drift Away" written by David Nunez aka Dave Newman who also released a single on Look, "Make Up Your Mind", written by Chavez.

Included below is Freddie singing his NS anthem six years ago in Mar 2018 at Soul Trip U.S.A. Las Vegas organised by Roberts.

Lawrence Beamen [2024] - Thinking Of You (7" Remix) / Been A Long Time [Izipho Soul #100] PLUS Full Izipho Discography

Patrick Biggerstaff's Izipho Soul celebrates its 100th single release on 8 Mar 2024 with the release of Lawrence Beamen's modern soul favourite "Thinkin' Of You" from his 2013 "Natural Love" album along with a previously unreleased song, "Been A Long Time".

Both released on vinyl for the first time but with a twist as "Thinkin' Of You" has been remixed by Don Turney at DKS Productions.

Singer, songwriter, composer, producer, actor and master in Psychology Lawrence Beamen, like so many soul singers, began singing, and honed his baritone voice, in church in his native Vicksburg, MS, from the age of 6. He relocated to California when 13 and at 16 he was invited to sing for Rosa Parks.

He reached the finals (Top 10) of Season 4 of America's Got Talent in 2009 where he sang Barry White's 1974 hit "You're The First, The Last, My Everything".

The 7" vinyl is available to pre-order now from Izipho Soul or from good vinyl retailers.

As alluded to on the post title, we have taken the opportunity of celebrating the 100th single with a full Izipho Soul Discography not available elsewhere. Check the Izipho Soul website for availability as, whilst they generally sell out quickly, there are some titles still available.
