Bossa Nostra & Vicki Anderson [2024] - Home Is Where The Hatred Is / The Message From The Soul Sisters (The Remixes E.P.) [Irma Records]

Recently covered by Billy Valentine, Gil Scott-Heron's "Home Is Where The Hatred Is" was also covered by Bossa Nostra & Vicki Anderson in 1996 and has been reissued digitally today with a set of remixes.

The release also includes three versions of "The Message From A Soul Sister", a James Brown written song that she originally recorded under her real name Myrna Barnes in 1970 on King.

Anderson was married to Bobby Byrd who are the parents of Carleen Anderson (The Brand New Heavies). She died last July aged 83 and a tribute was posted.

Jay Bishop [2024] - Just Thought I'd Let You Know [Late Pass]

The latest single by Detroit's Jay Bishop, "Just Thought I'd Let You Know", has a driving, infectious, funky bassline that draws you in. It's interspersed about 2:30 in with a guitar solo.

He has a large back catalogue dating back to 2016 on his Bandcamp page, yet we've not come across his music before and this is his third single already this year alone.

All his music is released by Tokyo based label Last Pass which states that it is dedicated to Jay's music, so whether or not it's his own label we don't know for sure, but his Soundcloud says he's based between Detroit and Japan, so may well be.

From writer's credits we assume his real name to be Johnathan Howard Davis.

Andy & The Big Funk [2024] - Funksploitation (Superfly) [Self Released] (Full Album Live Performance Video)

Recorded live at the famous Abbey Road Studios by Andy & The Big Funk is a version of Curtis Mayfield's funk classic "Superfly" for the soundtrack of the 1972 Blaxploitation movie which was remade in 2018.

The track is from a nine track album of covers "Funksploitation" which doesn't appear on the main DSPs but is available from ProStudioMasters. Most are taken from movie soundtracks  with "Superfly", "Across 110th Street" (Bobby Womack), "Bourgie Bourgie" (Gladys Knight & The Pips), and "Empire State Of Mind" (Alicia Keys) possibly being being the ones of most interest to soul listeners.

Andy Wood Mitchell began his career as a trainee engineer at Abbey Road Studios so comes full circle. He has been fronting bands from the age of 12 and formed several bands including the comically named Below Average White Band.

He was bought up on feature film music influenced by his father who was MD of Elstree Film Studios.

Kabwasa, or to give him his full title Etienne Nkum Abui Kabwasa Green, is from Watsonville, CA, and released his sophomore album "Kabwasa Presents… Supa Heavy Funk" on 17 Feb '23. We were going to post it then but it wasn't available on Spotify and then it got lost in the mix so here it is.

Don't be put off by the title as heavy funk it ain't!

Cole Williams Feat. Soul Tune Allstars [2022] - How We Care For Humanity [Soul Tunes Records & That'sMy Worldwide Records]

Posted a couple of weeks ago by Cole Williams Feat. Soul Tune Allstars was "Better Woman". Today, 'presumably', the vinyl flip, "How We Care For Humanity" is released digitally by Soul Tune Records. 

It's more of a funky song than the 60s retro "Better Woman" which, strangely, doesn't appear to be available digitally on the main platforms.

Having just checked out the Soul Tunes Records Bandcamp store, this is not in fact the flip, the flip is "Organize" and this track isn't listed so it's all getting rather confusing as "Better Woman" / "Organize" is also released today by Soul Tunes Records which will be posted separately to avoid even more confusion!

Edwin Starr [1970] - War [Gordy #G-7101]

Dedicated to Vladimir Putin! Nothing else to say except 52 years since it's release he has probably never listened to it and, if he has, he hasn't understood the message or received the memo!

Etta James [1969] - Tighten Up Your Own Thing [Cadet #5664]

Etta James does sistah funk! I'm not sure how well know "Tighten Up Your Own Thing" is?  Released in 1970 as a single which never troubled even the R&B charts. It was also released on a 1970 album "Etta James Sings Funk" which is a bit of a misnomer as there are only two or three tracks that I would describe as funk on the album as it is predominantly deep and bluesy ballads.

Mad Yella [2021] - With Your Love [Self Released]

Mad Yella are a relatively new soul/jazz/funk band from Kent, England. They debuted in 2019 and release their fifth single "With Your Love" today (5 Nov 2021).

I've included a live version of one of their previous singles "Being With You" (Dec 2019). I think theses guys are going places!
