Secret Night Gang [2023] - Belongs on a Place Called Earth [Brownswood Recordings] (Full Album)

Manchester jazz-funkers Secret Night Gang, led by vocalist Kemani Anderson and saxophonist Callum Connell, released their sophomore album "Belongs on a Place Called Earth" today. Right from the opening track "Respect Me", an epic 9 minute opus with a full 3 and a bit minute intro, you just know that you are in for a real treat. We can't help thinking that their sound on some tracks are akin to Jamiroquai meets Stevie Wonder!

The band has released just two singles since their self-titled 2021 debut album, "Out Of My Head" and "Don't Know What Tomorrow Brings" both are included.

We are not even going to attempt to choose standouts as everyone will have their own but on first listen we are leaning towards the soulful opening ("Respect Me") and closing ("Things Will Work Out") tracks but that could change with further listens!

Secret Night Gang [2023] - Out of My Head [Brownswood Recordings]

Manchester's Secret Night Gang released their self-titled debut album last October and have since only released one single "Don't Know What Tomorrow Brings" on 5 Apr and today another "Out Of My Head" which are bundled together as they will be featured on their forthcoming album "Belongs On A Place Called Earth" due on 23 Jun '23. which will also be available on CD and Vinyl.

The group began as vocalist of Kemani Anderson and saxophonist Callum Connell who met aged 7 playing football in south Manchester and then later at high school music lessons. They were joined by bassist Stu Whitehead forming a trio with drummer Mike Ilson and producer Yvonne 'D'Alchemiss' Ellis coming on board afterwards along with guitarist Jack Duckham.

Secret Night Gang - Live @ District, Liverpool TONIGHT (9 Dec 2021)

Manchester's Secret Night Gang are appearing tonight at District in Liverpool. Tickets are still available from Skiddle.

I've included their debut album and a live concert from 29th November 2020 from Hope Mill Studios in Manchester as a taster if you're in any doubt.

Secret Night Gang were handpicked by Gilles Peterson from Manchester’s vibrant live music scene. Newly signed to Brownswood, 2021 is set to be the main stage for them to breeze on to the scene, as a multi-generational band breathing new life into the classic British street-soul sound, founded by 21 year old singer/song-writer Kemani Anderson and multi-instrumentalist and song-writer Callum Connell.

Now joined on stage by legendary rhythm section Myke Wilson and Juneroy (52nd Street, Jazz Defektors, Corinne Bailey Rae, Swing Out Sister), with Jack Duckham on guitar and after 3 sellout shows in June 2021 (Jazz Cafe London, The Blues Kitchen Manchester & Brudenell Leeds) the generations have come together to carve out their own lane, a real celebration of exceptional songwriting and musicianship to expand on their indefinable eclectic sound. For the second time of asking, as it WAS released temporarily last Friday (15 Oct 2021) but then withdrawn a few hours later! Nothing like creating a bit of 'demand'? The tracks stayed available on Spotify for a day or two but the album only tracks were then withdrawn but are no live again.

The debut, self-titled, album from Manchester's Secret Night Gang is released today (22 Oct 2021). It includes all four tracks previously released as singles which includes the standout track "Wanna Be With You" along with "Captured", "The Sun" and "Journey".  I think "You Are The One" may well get some action. On the more mellow side another track worth highlighting is "Fall In Love". Some have now also picked up on "Beautiful Day", but it's one of those albums where there is something for everyone!
