Cota Feat. Trish Toledo [2021] - If You Don't Mind [Trejo’s Music/Bashtown Music Group]

I discovered this single "If You Don't Mind" that Cota recorded with Trish Toldeo whilst doing the post on Cota's latest single. This one seems to have passed most by. It was released on 9 Jul 2021 and is a pretty good retro soul tune with a crossover feel.

Although it sounds like it could be a cover of a late 60s/70s song it is credited to Jose Barrera Cota so I presume it's an original song, but, as we know, writer credits often get 'blurred'!

Neo Northern Soul / Crossover Playlist

It's that time of the week when the 'newbies' dry up, so it'll probably be a partly retro day today.

To kick things off here's a tracklist put together of new Northern Soul/Crossover tracks. The criteria are that they must all be new songs, not covers, reissues or unreleased vintage tracks, that have a retro NS/XO feel and have been released in the last twelve months. 

For example Alexander Morris' version of Ronnie McNeir's 'Isn't She A Pretty Girl', unfortunately doesn't qualify as it's obviously a new cover version, Eddie Holman 'Ready Willing & Able' is an unreleased vintage track and reissues speak for themselves.

Also, as it's a Spotify playlist, they must have been released digitally and be available on Spotify - I know that's an anachronism for many, but welcome to the 21st century! I've cobbled together about 18 tracks so far (71 mins). There are probably some I've missed or forgotten about, so if you feel something should be included then please leave a comment and, if it meets the criteria, I'll add it.

Carmy Love [2021] - Rebel / Thinkin' About You [Big A.C]

EXCLUSIVE - Full version of Carmy Love's new track 'Rebel'

Carmy Love's 'Thinkin' About You' was released digitally on 26 Mar 2021 (posted here 27 Mar) and did well, reaching #8 on the Global Soul chart, but the vinyl 7" is yet to be released and was due 28 May 2021 and is now delayed until 15 Jun 2021 owing to delays at the pressing plant. 

Big AC records has decided to put it out as the B side to a track titled 'Rebel' and have released a sound clip 'teaser' of it which sounds pretty good too from the mere 30 second clip. So I contacted Big AC and asked if I could post the full version, which they agreed to with the proviso that it is switched to Spotify when released on 28 May 2021 (now done).

The vinyl release is limited to 500 copies and, with the success of 'Thinkin' Of You' and hearing a soundclip of 'Rebel', I'm pretty sure this will sell out, possibly on pre-orders alone, so I would recommend pre-ordering to avoid disappointment (link on images) as this will inevitably end up on Discogs for double the price, or more, once they are sold out!

'Rebel' will be available to download from all the main digital outlets (pre-order here) if you are unfortunate to miss out on the vinyl release.

Carmy Love is from North West London and was a member of acid jazz group from London New Street Adventure (NSA). Prior to that she recorded on 'Just Dance' with Cool Million in 2010 on their 'Back For More' album.

NSA band leader Nick Corbin owns Big AC records with his wife Sophie Heath. NSA disbanded when Nick decided to become independent, breaking away from the Acid Jazz label to focus on a solo career. He has released an album 'Sweet Escape' and several singles (available on vinyl from Big AC). He wrote 'Thinkin' About You' as well as other material for artists on the label.

Jeb Loy Nichols [2021] - Can't Cheat The Dance / We Gotta Work On It [Timmion #TR-735]

These Scandinavians are getting everwhere at the moment, two releases from Sweden's Soul Tune label, posted already today, and now another from Finland's Timmion label!

Jeb Loy Nichols is a blue-eyed country soul singer originating from Wyoming but now lives in the Welsh countryside. He's teamed up with Timmion's Cold Diamond & Mink to release this double sider, with an album 'Jeb Loy' in the pipline for later in the year (expected 11 Jun).

'Can't Cheat The Dance' is available digitally now but you'll have to buy the 7" vinyl (available via BandCamp) to get the flip side 'We Gotta Work On It' (or wait for the album release). I've linked to a 60 second sample of the flip below.

Carmy Love [2021] - Thinkin' About You [Big AC]

A superb debut solo single from Carmy Love is released 26 Mar 2021 on Big AC Records (an East London based independent label owned by husband and wife, Nick Corbin and Sophie Heath). The song was written by Nick Corbin. 

This has across the board appeal to lovers of vintage, modern and neo soul. It sounds timeless to these ears.  It sounds like it's a vintage, previously unreleased, record, whilst at the same time having a modern feel.

It is available digitally from 26 Mar 2021 with a limited edition vinyl release due the week 21-28 May 2021. I expect this to sell out quickly so if you want one I suggest you pre-order at Big AC Records.

This one will definately feature in this week's 'Dirty Dozen' (the top 12 new releases I publish each Sunday).
