The New Mastersounds w. Adryon De León / Josh Hytner / Lamar Williams [2021] - A Brighter Day [Color Red]

The New Mastersounds are a four man band from Leeds founded in 2001 who have now released around eighteen albums. They have released several versions of "A Brighter Day" over the last few months with different vocalists i.e. Josh Hoyner (16 Jul),  Adryon De León (Orgone) (20 Aug) and Lamar Williams Jr (3 Sep)  (who is the son of Allman Brothers / Sea Level bassist Lamar Williams).

I'm not quite sure how to categorise the tune, funky but not really funk, jazzy but not really jazz, it has a Northern Soul feel and tempo (160 bpm) but again not really NS, so I'll just tag as modern soul! Each version offers something a little different.

Orgone [2021] - Show Me [3 Palm]

The latest release from Orgone featuring Adryon De León.

Their recent releases have been cover versions, i.e. Marva Whitney's 'It's My Thing' and William DeVaughn's 'Be Thankful', so it's good to hear something original.

It's got a bit of a retro feel which, for some reason, reminds me a little of Ashford & Simpson's 'It Seems To Hang On' as it's got that vibe, could it be another cover (of something I don't recognise)? Perhaps not, as it seems to have been written by several of the band members (Halterman, Hastie, Rios & Jennings).

Orgone is an eight piece soul/funk band from L.A. formed in the 90s with Adryon De León joining later (around 2013) on lead vocals. Their recording debut was in 2001 with an eponymous album. Since then they have released around a dozen albums to date.

Adryon de León [2021] - Ally [Color Red]

A funky tune for a change. A retro groove with an up to date message (i.e. 'Black Lives Matter') released 20 Jan 2021.  The song reflects on the riots after the death of George Floyd which occurred only  two blocks from her house in Long Beach, California.  

Adryon was a member of LA band Orgone until she embarked on a solo career.  Orgone  are probably best known for their cover of Beginning Of The End's 1971 funk classic 'Funky Nasseau'.
