Jeska [2023] - Red Right Hand [10X Music Group]

Posted for novelty value as "Red Right Hand" by Jeska is a cover version of the theme from Peaky Blinders which was originally recorded by Aussie band Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds on their "Let Love In" album in 1994. 

The phrase 'Red Right Hand' is derived from the 17th century English poet John Milton's poem Paradise Lost. i.e. "What if the breath that kindled those grim fires, / Awaked, should blow them into sevenfold rage, / And plunge us in the flames; or from above / Should intermitted vengeance arm again / His red right hand to plague us?"

Different versions have been used in various episodes including Arctic Monkeys (S02E03), PJ Harvey (S03), Fidlar (S04E01), a duet by Iggy Pop and Jarvis Cocker (S04E05), Laura Marling (S04E06), Patti Smith (S06E05) and probably others.

Peaky Blinders wasn't the first show to use the song, it was first featured in the movie "Dumb And Dumber" in 1994, in an episode of The X Files in 1996 and was used in the first three "Scream" movies as well as featuring in several other movies before it was used in 2013 in Peaky Blinders.

There are loads of other versions recorded with this one by Jeska, perhaps, the closest to being 'soulful'? Her voice sounds a tad like Maggie Bell (of Stone The Crows) who sang the theme for Taggart and is claimed to be Frankie of Frankie & Johnny fame who recorded one of the best blue-eyed Northern Soul classics "I'll Hold You" for Decca in 1966.

It transpires that Jeska is multi-talented Jeska Bailey from Austin, TX, who is a multi-instrumentalist, trained opera singer, blues vocalist, photographer, model and painter. She is married to Guy Forsyth and released an album ("Conspirators") with him in 2019.
