A new version of an instrumental hit for The Soulful Strings on Cadet in 1967. They were a Cadet studio project led by arranger Richard Evans which consisted of many of the Cadet in-house musicians including Charles Stepney (organ/vibes), Phil Upchurch and Roon Steel (guitar), Lennie Druss (sax/flute), and Cleveland Eaton and Louis Satterfield (bass).
They recorded mainly instrumental cover versions and "Burning Spear" was a single taken from their second album "Groovin' With The Soulful Strings" in 1967 which was their only singles chart entry reaching #36 R&B and #64 Hot 100 in Feb 1968.
The song has been covered several times with S.O.U.L. doing a version on Musicor on 1971 and composer Richard Evans releasing his own upbeat jazz/funk version in 1979. The original has received spins on Northern Soul, and Richard Evans version on jazz funk, dancefloors over the years.
The latest version is a live version by The Sure Fire Soul Ensemble from a forthcoming album "Live at Panama 66" due on 28 Apr '23.
The Sure Fire Soul Ensemble is a 9 piece heavy, instrumental funk band from San Diego, CA, who have released their last four albums on Colemine Records. the new album is for All-Town Sound and includes live version of tracks from their first four albums as well as a few covers including "Burning Spear" which has been released as the lead single on 1 Mar '23.
