Almost 18 months since the release of his debut album "The First", Sir Spencer (Craig Sullivan) has racked his brains to
name the follow up "The Second" due for release on 21 Oct 2022. A double single "Control Me" / "Turn Us Back Around" was released on 30 Sep to whet the appetite which follows "Sunflower" from June, all included on the ten track album. "Sunflower" was also subjected to four alternative mixes in August and released as
a five track maxi single.
"The Second" features collaborations with a range of artists: California-based
artist Blckatom, Chicago native, Minneapolis-local R&B singer
Kendra Glenn, up-and-coming LA-based Taylor Simone Harvey, singer-songwriter Chrissi Poland (Michael
Bolton, Bette Midler) and the ubiquitous
Jason Peterson DeLaire.
Sir Spencer says
"At the time we were wrapping up the collection of songs that
ended up on "The First", we had a couple of others, notably
"Sunflower" and an early version of "Maybe", that were almost
done. We decided to just keep on writing and collaborating
remotely and we scheduled a few in-person sessions as and when we
could. The result is a record that pretty much showcases our broad
musical interests, provides an outlet for some experimentation for
us and the other artists. We think it hangs together pretty
well."
The tight 10 track album spans current and 80s pop, R&B, funk
and soul worlds effortlessly from bouncy and breezy first track
"Sunflower" which features Nelson Braxton (Michael Bolton, Braxton
Brothers) on bass, Sam Brawner (Raquel Rodriguez / Blue Dream
Studios) on drums and Jason Peterson DeLaire (Michael Bolton, Prince,
Peterson Family) on vocals, to the 90s freestyle vibe of "Turn Us
Back Around" featuring Chrissi Poland on vocals and co-writing
duties.
Apart from the three songs already released as singles
SoulStrutter's choice cuts are "Don't Tell Me", "Maybe" and "Be About It" feat. Kendra Glenn. Craig's keeping the name of the featured vocalist on the first two tracks anonymous (for now) but it is someone we all know and love!
