The latest release from Yann Vatiste's Epsilon records is his own
production. He found and sent three guys to Malaco Studios in Jackson, Mississippi in March 2021 to cut the song "When I See
Your Smile".
The artists involved are Walter Johnson who began his musical career as a
singer in a doo wop group in 1958. Bassist Greg Smith who Johnson met 1974
at Jackson State University when he was a member of Rock-Bottom and asked
Smith to join the group, and singer Tommy Johnson who they hooked up with later. The song was written by Johnson and Smith with Smith on vocals.
Johnson and Smith moved to Kansas City in the early 1980s for work and
formed a new group and called it Realside and wrote "Hang Loose", "Flyin
High" and "I Got A Jones For You" on their own label Walterhouse Records. The first two singles are very collectable and were bootlegged in 1984 on SBR (Song
Bird Records) records.
Realside disbanded in the mid 80s after Walter 'got in trouble' and Greg
and Walter separated for almost 35 years. Walter returned to Jackson after
living in Dallas for a few years and discovered that Greg was still living
there and talked to him about getting him into another group and were joined
by singer Tommy Johnson.
Now at the age of nearly 80, Walter and Greg, now 70, they decided to make music
until they die and have many more songs to share with soul music
lovers.
