The legendary (Detroit) Spinners have a new album "'Round the Block and Back Again" due to be released in a couple of weeks (27 Aug 2021). To date they
have pre-released two singles from it which, to be brutally frank, were not very good! A third single from the album "Vivid Memories" was pre-released on Friday (13 Aug 2021) which is better, so
hopefully there may be some other decent tracks on the forthcoming
album?
Back around 1972 when I was a wee slip of a lad it was jointly The Detroit
Spinners ("I'll Be Around", "Could It Be I'm Falling In Love", "Ghetto
Child", "Mighty Love") and The Detroit Emeralds ("You Want It You Got It",
"Do Me Right", "Feel The Need", "I Think Of You") which gave me my 'baptism'
into the wonderful world of soul music. So I sincerely hope this album isn't
too much of a disappointment.
Only one of the original members
survives (they were formed in 1954),
Henry Farnborough
who is now 83. Two previous lead singers, Philippe Wynne and Bobby Smith, are
now deceased and John Edwards suffered a stroke in 2000 and was forced to
retire and was replaced temporarily with the return of G.C. Cameron who was with them during their Motown period
It's a shame (no pun intended!) that, from a massive back catalogue of music, they are probably best known to non-soul people for their two 1980 pop hits "Working My Way Back To You / Forgive Me Girl" (a disco medley arrangement of a Linzer & Randell song which was a US hit for The Four Seasons in 1965 and a song written by Michael Zager) and "Cupid / I've Loved You For A Long Time" (another disco medley of Sam Cooke's Cupid and another Michael Zager song)!
