The Dirty Dozen - The Best Of 2022... Part 22 (Jun 2022 Wk 22) Spotify Playlist

SoulStrutter selections of the best releases this week 
(Jun 2022 Wk 22)
In no particular order other than tempo. 

All tracks in this week's playlist were released in the last week, although two have been previously released. Menava appears to be a re-edit of a track they released as a single (and an album track) in Jan 2020 when they were known as Elina Jones & The Fireflies. The selected track from Garrett P. Tyler's debut album is the title track "New Normal", which was released as his debut single last Sep.

There were quite a lot of good releases this week, yet once again nothing is really sticking it's head above the crowd except for the new album from Blue Soul Ten.

Doobie Powell's new album "Leander's Road" is quite nice if you like jazz/soul and I've gone with "Reminisce" from it.

This week's "Neo Dirty Dozen" is, once again, dominated by the females. My choice from it would probably have to be the new EP, "Bigger Dreams" from Nia Sultana.

This week's SoulStrutter Selection of the Week has to be Blue Soul Ten's sophomore album "This Is Worth It".  It's a superb album and gets even better with each play. Three of my favoured tracks (at the moment) have been put in the playlist. I've had the album playing in the background whilst doing chart posts and this post and it's on it's third iteration and I haven't felt the need to skip it on which is always a good sign of a solid and consistent album. I'll stick my neck out and predict that this could well be a future #1 on Global Soul chart as there are plenty of different tracks that could/should attract airplay.

The Dirty Dozen - The Best Of 2022... Covers, Reissues, Remixes & Samples Part 11 (Jun 2022 Wk 22)


SoulStrutter selections for Jun 2022 Wk 22 of the best non-original songs i.e. cover versions, remixes, reissues, previously unreleased and new songs using samples or new releases with a retro feel. (In no particular order).

It goes from famine to feast. Most weeks I'm scratching around to find a dozen and this week I contemplated having to split in two as there are a shed load of reissues and a good few remixes. I could have added even more reissues if I had included some tracks from the forthcoming Kent compilation "Atlanta Soul Artistry 1967-1975" but instead of adding them here I'll refer you to it's posting. Therefore, the top half of the playlist consists of reissues and the bottom half covers, samples and remixes.
There are a pair of reissues from Izipho Soul and another pair from Soul4Real. Then we have a Numero group reissue and three tracks from the reissue of Sunfire's solitary, self-titled, 1982 album.

Several recent tracks have had new remixes. A few have only been out a matter of weeks and have already been remixed i.e. Sidibe, Anthony David & Algebra Blessett and The Terri Green Project and the other two were quite big hits last year from Melonyx and Tarrey Torae.

A couple of others worth mentioning that can't be included in the playlist, as they are Badncamp only releases, include Gloria Gaynor "Philadelphia Re-Edit Sessions", an EP from Jack Tennis sampling/remixing some 70s classics, Gloria Scott covering Joe Smooth's "Promised Land" and DoctorSoul remixing Atlantic Starr's "When Love Calls".

Maria Sanchez [2022] - Hey Love / Give Me Your Lovin' [Soul Tune #ST4508]


Both sides of this 7" release have been previously released and posted digitally. First came "Hey Love" on 4 Feb followed by "Give Me Your Lovin'" on 18 Feb.

They are both now available on 7" vinyl from 3 Jun from Bandcamp via Stockholm based label Soul Tune run by Niclas Wretelid, one of the members of the Soul Tunes Allstars.

Maria Sanchez (aka Groovy MS from Riverside, CA) also released "Dynamite" / "Sensation" May 2021.

Global Soul Chart 4th Jun 2022 (Week 22)

The Global Soul chart broadcast on Sat 4th Jun as it is every Saturday between  5pm-7pm (GMT) on Global Soul Radio.

Each week around a dozen or more 'Breakers' are interspersed with chart entries. These will be posted separately. 

NOTE There was no show broadcast this week.

Raheem Devaughn hangs on to the top spot for the third consecutive week. Three of four new entries last week all move up with Sidibe staying rooted to the third place. Whether or not the new Pat Lok Remix released on Friday will come to her assistance remains to be seen. One of the best 'pure soul' tunes around at the moment from Juanita Wynn, which entered at #15 last week, is the highest climber up ten to #5.

There were four new entries this week with the highest being the new album from Michon Young (LLE V3 Conversation Piece). Men At Large, Ravyn Lenae and Teri Tobin are the other three. Making way for them were all four predicted last week but J. Brown, who I thought might struggle, has  moved up four places.

As far as next week's predictions are concerned they look fairly obvious. PJ Morton, SunniDread, Reuben James and Sabrina Claudio look almost certain to go, but there are also a few others above which may struggle to hang on another week i.e. Gavin Holligan, Roszunn and Devon Howard.

VA [2022] - Atlanta Soul Artistry 1965-1975 [KENT #523] (Full Album)


Ace/Kent have a new compilation of 70s Atlanta soul from Michael Thevis' GRC, Aware and Hotlanta labels due out on vinyl on 1 Jul 2022.

Most have been released before either on vinyl or CD compilations and I've managed to find all but three on Spotify. The three missing tracks are all previously unreleased in any format.

Joe Hinton's "I'm Tired Of Dreaming", which he co-wrote with Marlin McNichols, was recorded by Pure Velvet in 1975 on Osiris so I've included that version and a sample of Joe Hinton's original unreleased version.

King Hannibal (aka James Shaw) "Fight Fire With Fire" is from live tapes recorded in Atlanta and L.A. and is also released for the first time.

Joe Graham recorded four tracks for Aware around 1973 all of which were shelved until now as "I'm Leaving" gets it's first release.

The compilation is available to pre-order on vinyl from Ace/Kent.
