VA [2022] - Eccentric Deep Soul [Numero Group] (Full Album)

Following Nike's "Just Do It" and Heinz's "Beanz Meanz Heinz", the #3 advertising strapline of all time (in UK) is Ronseal's "Does exactly it says on the tin" and that's exactly what the title of this compilation does.

Numero Group has selected thirteen deep soul sides and titled it "Eccentric Deep Soul" consisting of mainly quite obscure cuts from the 60s & 70s. A few of them have been released as digital singles recently like George McGregor, Eboney Essence and Helene Smith.

Some are quite raw, gritty and earthy and possibly not everyone's taste but they will be a delight to lovers of the genre.

The compilation was released digitally on Friday (22 Jul 2022) and, whilst a tad on the pricey side for a digital comp at £9.99, would save you at least a grand if you were even able to find the tracks on vinyl. (prices based on Discogs median and high sales prices at time of posting)

Once again Spotify doesn't list the artists so click on cover image below for full track listing

GLC [2022] - Like We Use To (Wiener Roast) [NoBx Entertainment]

Here's one that completely passed my by when released at the end of June (28 Jun 2022) which I heard last night on Mike Stephens excellent show on Starpoint Radio (catch Mike every Sunday between 18:00-20:00 (BST)).

It's a two-stepper "Like We Use To (Wiener Roast)" by GLC.

Whilst the main DSPs are all stating 28 Jun for release, a video promo for it by the label (NoBx Entertainment) states 5 Jul as the release date, which was a Tuesday so may explain why many of us missed it?

Silk [1979] - I Can't Stop (Turning You On) [PIR #ZS9 3730] v LF System [2022] - Afraid To Feel [Warner]

If you have had the misfortune to listen to national radio anytime in the last couple of weeks you will undoubtedly have heard a mash-up topping the UK pop chart by LF System which bastardises this modern soul classic from Silk. All fine and dandy if the song's writers, or families in case of at least one (Joseph Jefferson) now deceased, see a red cent for it!

Silk started out as Ujima in the early 70s changing their name to Anglo Saxon Brown in 1976 becoming Silk by 1979. Their lead female singer was Debra Henry who is the aunt of Nicole Henry who has featured here several times in recent months.

The new song that samples "I Can't Stop (Turning You On)" (released on Philadelphia International in 1979) is by LF System titled "Afraid To Feel" and I've counted at least nine different mixes of it.

The song has been posted here previously but worth another post to remind you what it 'should' sound like and I may as well post one of the new versions (the main version) for those who have been lucky enough to miss it ... why should the rest of us suffer alone? It has been speeded up and sounds like Mickey Mouse on speed!

It has been on the UK chart for 8 weeks (since 9 Jun) and has been #1 for the last 3 weeks!

DJ Kool Keith [2022-07-21] - Soulful Slow Jams [Soul Groove Radio]

This week's episode of Soulful Slow Jams by The Soul Emperor DJ Kool Keith broadcast on Sunday 24 Jul 2022 on Soul Groove Radio. He's slipping this week as nothing from the 90s or 2010s! Plenty from the 70s and quite a smattering from 2022.

This week's one to highlight is from Gents & The Lady "I Can Feel The Tears". It's not dated on either Discogs or 45Cat but probably 1969 as it has the same cat. no. as the only other release on the label dated that year.

LaVorn Smith was a member of the group who also recorded as Act III releasing a single on Mala in 1966 "Sweet Anticipation" / "I'm Gonna Try And Be Better". They also recorded the same song, "I Can Feel The Tears", on Harley as Act III in 1970 (reissued by Numero Group in Jan 2022) owned by one of the writers and group member Fonnie Harley co-written with sister Donnie Harley. Fonnie was a member of The Lyrics from Memphis in the early 60s who released around four singles, the last two on Goldwax and the first single for the label. Their first two songs were recorded at Stax and released on their Mid South subsidiary in 1962.

The trio later recorded as Donnie, Fonnie & La Vorn on Memphis label Trump in 1970 "It's A Sweet Love" / "A Woman Who'll Let You Be A Man".

LaVorn Smith had another solo single "Without Your Love I'll Be Nothing" / "Lonesome Highway" on another Memphis label K.M.C. (date unknown) which was the only release on the label so possibly a private press.

They went on to record as Numbers who released a single "Got To Pull Away"/ "Turn Me On" on Rolashed in 1977, two funky tunes inevitably written by the Harley siblings. Another one-off on the label out of Memphis so again probably a private press.

Catch Kool Keith live every Sunday between 14:00-16:00 (BST) on Soul Groove Radio or listen back to, or download, previous show from Podmatic
